South Easton, Mass. – A total of 37 athletes from the Northeast-10 have qualified for the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships, which will be held March 12-13 at the Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.

University of Massachusetts Lowell leads the NE-10 with 16 track and field athletes (11 men and 5
women) that qualified for the national championships. Junior Donte Brown (Raynham, Mass.) highlights a list of UMass Lowell athletes and will be competing in the 400-meter dash and the 4 X 400-meter relay. On the women’s side, senior Haley Catarius (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman Shannon Cunningham (Foxboro, Mass.) will both compete in the 4 X 400-meter relay, as well as one individual event. Catarius will compete in the 800-meter run, while Cunningham qualified for the 400-meter dash.

University of New Haven’s junior Shannon Gagne (Meriden, Conn.) will be participating in two events, including the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Gagne was the Northeast-10 Championship’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete, as well as, the 2010 Northeast-10 Female Athlete of the Year. Southern Connecticut State will be represented by senior Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.) who qualified for the 60-meter hurdles.

Northeast-10 Male Athlete of the Year freshman Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass.) from Stonehill College and American International freshman Noel James (Whitman, Mass.) are seeded one and two, respectively, in the high jump. Thomas will also compete in the 60-meter hurdles at the national championships. Freshman Glarius Rop (Eldoret, Kenya) will also be representing American International at NCAA’s and will be coming in the 5,000-meter run. Rop holds a conference-best 14:08.83 in the 5,000-meter run this season.

With 16 member institutions the Northeast-10 shares the distinction of being the largest Division II conference in the country along with the PSAC and WVIAC. Its 23 championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II conference.
