New Haven's Gagne Named East Region Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year

New Orleans, La. - University of New Haven senior track and field sprinterShannon Gagne has been recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as the East Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year. 

New Haven head track and field coach Kevin LaSure was also recognized by the association as the Women's East Region Coach of the Year.

Gagne, who earned her fourth East Region Athlete of the Year recognition, will headline the Chargers at the NCAA Division II National Championship in Turlock, Calif. next week. She has national top-ten performances in the 200 meter and 400 meter dashes, as well as the long jump. She was the Northeast-10 Conference Track Athlete of the Year and the Athlete of the Championship Meet after posting top finishes in four events.

The senior was also recognized by the USTFCCCA during the indoor season as the NCAA Division II National Track Athlete of the Year.

LaSure helped guide the women to a second place finish at the NE-10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 6 and 7. The team also finished 12th at the New England Championships with six student-athletes earning All-Region honors in 19 different events. The Chargers also have five entries at the NCAA Division II National Championship meet next week.
