South Easton, Mass. – The University of New Haven's Shannon Gagne has been named The Capital One Academic College Division Player of the Year for Women's Track & Field/Cross Country in the College Division, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Gagne, a graduate student who is pursuing her Master's degree in national security, has obtained a 3.95 G.P.A in her graduate work and graduated from New Haven with a 3.93 G.P.A in her undergraduate work.
This past year she was honored as the USTFCCA Division II Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, as well as the Northeast-10 Conference Woman of the Year. She was also named the Northeast-10 Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Gagne is a six-time All-American, and led New Haven to a second place finish at the Northeast-10 outdoor championships this past spring and to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championship.
She captured five individual national championship titles in 2011. At the indoor championships, she won the titles in the 200-meter run, the 400-meter run, and the long jump. At the outdoor championships, Gagne captured the title in the 200-meter run and the 400-meter run. She became one of only three student-athletes at the Division II level to win five national titles in one year.
The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that are committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,500 student-athletes. Each year, 4,500 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country.
