Nine Southern Connecticut Owls Set to Compete in NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Six men and three women from Southern Connecticut State University will compete in the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships May 25-27 at Emporia, Kansas.

Coach Jim Barber's women's team, which placed second in the Northeast-10 Conference indoor and outdoor championships this season, will be represented by juniors Thatcha DaCosta (Englewood, N.J.) and Merline "Stacey" Egbert (Danbury, Conn.) in the triple and long jumps and graduate student Randi Cuccaro (Oxford, Conn.) in the javelin.

Coach Jack Maloney's men's team, the 2006 NE-10 indoor and outdoor champion, will be represented by six athletes, led by high jumper Ivan Schmidt (Bridgeport, Conn.). The only track and field performer in Southern history to win two IC4A career championships, Schmidt will be joined by graduate student Ramon Laboy (Danbury, Conn.) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase; junior Robert Keizer (Great Neck, N.Y.) in the triple jump; senior Jon Seymour (Farmington, Conn.) in the 800; senior Jeff Cretella (East Haven, Conn.) in the shot put; and junior Mike Cebula (White Plains, N.Y.) in the 1500.
