Southern Connecticut's Schmidt and Jack Maloney Honored by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Senior high jumper Ivan Schmidt (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Jack Maloney, head coach of the Southern Connecticut State University men's track and field and cross country programs, have been honored by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Schmidt was the Northeast region's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. He was named the Northeast-10 Conference's most outstanding athlete and won his second IC4A championship in the high jump. Schmidt broke his own Southern record with a height of seven feet, 1.75 inches and is competing this week in the NCAA Division II outdoor championships in Emporia, Kansas.

Maloney, who also won this award in 2004, was the Northeast region's Outdoor Coach of the Year. In his eighth year as the Owls' head coach, Maloney has six athletes competing at the 2006 NCAA Division II championships in Emporia, Kansas, beginning Thursday. He guided his men to indoor and outdoor championships in the Northeast-10 Conference this season.
