COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's men's soccer team was involved in its second fundraiser already this semster, raising more than $600 for Save the Children and those affected by Hurricane Irma.
Eight members of the men's soccer program have ties to Florida, having either grown up or played high school soccer in the state that was greatly affected by the hurricane. During their home contest with Merrimack on Tuesday, the Purple Knights sold T-shirts and accepted donations - through assistance from the women's soccer team - with all funds going toward Save the Children, which is aiding relief efforts from natural disasters around the world.
According to its website, Save the Children gives children in the United States and around the world a healthy start, the opportunity to learn, and protection from harm. When disaster strikes, it puts children's needs first. To learn more or help the relief efforts, visit savethechildren.org.
"I did a little bit of research on what the best charities were to donate directly to hurricane relief efforts, and I came across Save the Children," said senior Daniel du Feu. "I went on their website and read about them, and we liked the focus it had on children and families, and specifically getting children back into the classroom."
Du Feu, senior Daniel Castaño, junior Daniel Pernia, sophomores Cris Cervantes, Gabriel Pineda and Andres Rivas, and first-year Pierre Denis all have connections to the Miami area, while first-year Alex Matthey hails from Fort Myers, along the west coast of the state. In all, 18 players in the program since 2011 have had ties to Florida.
Recently, Saint Michael's and Saint Anselm played their inaugural Community Cup, with each squad donating $500 to Inti Academy, which serves underprivileged youths in Manchester, N.H., through soccer. The Community Cup will take place each season during the teams' non-conference meeting, with the home team choosing a local charity.
