FALMOUTH, Mass. – Stonehill
College’s Dana Borges has received
the inaugural Northeast-10 Conference Man of the Year Award, it was
announced Monday night at the conference’s end-of-the-year
banquet on Cape Cod.
Borges, a team captain for the Skyhawks’ ice hockey team,
hails from Taunton, Mass. and recently graduated from Stonehill
with a 3.72 grade-point average as a Criminology major.
“Whether it has been in the classroom, on the ice, or in the
community, I have always been determined to go above and beyond the
expected,” said Borges. “My one goal has been to make a
difference, and I am happy to see that I have made a positive
impact within the Stonehill community.”
For his efforts in the classroom, Borges was selected as a
2011-12 Capital One Academic All-District At-Large honoree. He was
also a two-time Northeast-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence
winner for ice hockey and a three-time Northeast-10 Academic
All-Conference selection. The Taunton native also made Dean’s
List and the Northeast-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll every
semester.
One of Borges’ most recent accolades came this past April
when he received the Edward E. Martin Scholar-Athlete Award, which
is given to the top male and female scholar-athletes from the
Stonehill senior class.
On the ice, Borges totaled 87 points in his Stonehill career, and
led the Northeast-10 with 37 points on 15 goals and 22 assists in
2012-13, a year in which he was a First Team All-Conference choice.
Borges was also selected as a Joe Concannon Award finalist
this past season, which recognizes the best American-born player in
New England playing at the Division II or III level.
"Dana is the true epitome of a student-athlete,” said
Brendan Sullivan, Stonehill Director of
Intercollegiate Athletics. “He is a talented individual who
has chosen to apply himself in the classroom, the ice rink, as well
as in both our campus and greater community. Most impressive, he
has excelled in each area throughout his time at Stonehill. We are
thrilled to have watched him compete for the past four years and
even prouder today with this honor, for which he is a most
deserving selection.”
He was also involved in numerous campus activities and community
projects, including the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC),
Life Skills, Team IMPACT and he served as developer and chairperson
of the SAAC/MIAA Event this year.
In 2012, Borges also completed internships with the Public
Defenders Office in Brockton, Mass. and the Department of Justice
in Boston. He also visited the White House on a political science
field trip last June.
