LIU Post, Stonehill Advance to Conference Championship Finals

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 20, 2014

The top two seeds in the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey Championship will meet in Saturday's title game following semifinal wins earlier today.

#1 LIU Post 4, #4 American International 0

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - After being named the NE-10 Player of the Year earlier in the day, junior forward Keliann Margiotta recorded a hat trick to propel the No. 4 and top-seeded LIU Post field hockey team to Saturday's Northeast-10 Conference Championship final, following a 4-0 blanking of fourth-seeded American International at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.

Margiotta's offensive performance boosted her name to the top of the Pioneer (16-2) record books. Her seven-point performance (3 G, 1 A) made her the program's all-time assists and points leader, surpassing former teammate Carlee Dragon. She also shattered the team's single-season goal mark.

It didn't take long for the Sewell native to break the career assist record. Just two minutes into the contest, graduate defender Dani Crouse converted a Margiotta helper to give the green and gold an early 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, in the 13th minute, Margiotta re-directed a Steph Mocerino shot into the cage, extending the LIU Post lead to 2-0.

Margiotta wasn't done there. She struck again in the opening stanza, on an unassisted effort in the 23rd minute, to break the single-season goal record.

In second half action, Margiotta clinched the hat trick by sneaking a shot through AIC (12-8) goaltender Ainslee Penfield's (Greenfield, Mass.) legs, ensuring LIU Post's 4-0 win and the Pioneers' spot in the NE-10 title game.

Between the pipes, sophomore goalie Ericka Parks made two saves for her 14th win of 2014. Overall, the green and gold attempted 30 total shots, while limiting the Yellow Jackets to only six.

#2 Stonehill 3, #3 Adelphi 1

EASTON, Mass. –  Second-seeded Stonehill College used a two goal first half to fuel a 3-1 triumph over third-seeded Adelphi University in semifinal round action of the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference field hockey championship at W.B. Mason Stadium today.

Stonehill (16-3, 9-2 NE-10) advances to its sixth NE-10 Championship on Saturday where it will face top-seeded and No. 4-ranked LIU Post (16-2, 10-1 NE-10) for the second straight year in the title game on Long Island at 1 p.m.

Junior All-American Erika Kelly, pictured, scored a pair of goals, while classmate Elizabeth Thornton added a marker for Stonehill. Senior Elizabeth Genovese preserved the win with five saves, including three in the second half, as Stonehill finished with a 21-14 advantage for shots, including 15-6 in dominant first half, and held a 10-6 edge in penalty corners, 8-1 in the opening half. Sophomore Sarah Morse chipped in with an assist and defensive save for the Skyhawks.

Junior Molly Cuevas scored the lone goal for Adelphi, while classmate Kelly Serrao kept the Panthers in the game with 12 saves, including nine in the first half.
