NE-10 has Top 30 Honoree for Fourth Straight Year
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Recent Le Moyne College graduate and former women's lacrosse student-athlete Maggie Monnat has been named a Top 30 honoree for the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, as announced by the NCAA earlier this week. Monnat was honored as the NE-10 Woman of the Year back in June.
With the selection, the NE-10 has now had at least one top 30 honoree in each of the last four years and has had eight honorees in total since 2009. Last year, the league was the only Division II conference with multiple selections (Gina Lirange and Ivy Watts).
The selection committee will name nine finalists from the group of 30 later this month, while the award winner will be announced on Oct. 16 at a ceremony in Indianapolis.
A record 517 school nominees were submitted this year, which was whittled down to 142 conference nominees. The committee selected 30 women from that pool – 10 from each of the three NCAA divisions – representing 13 sports and a host of undergraduate majors, including biology, accounting, criminal justice, education, engineering and computer science. The top 30 honorees have demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.
Monnat, the first NE-10 Woman of the Year in the school history, received a collection of accolades during her collegiate career. She was named the NE-10 Sport Excellence Award recipient for women's lacrosse each of the last two years, becoming the first women's lacrosse student-athlete in league history to earn the award multiple times, while also being selected to the NE-10 Academic All-Conference Team three straight years. She was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Second Team in early June after picking up her second straight CoSIDA Academic All-District™ First Team honors in mid-May.
On the field, she was an IWLCA All-America Second Team selection for the second straight year and was tabbed as a senior to the IWLCA All-North Region Second Team and the Northeast-10 Conference All-Conference Second Team. As a junior, she was recognized as the NCAA Elite 89 award recipient at the NCAA Championships and was named to the IWLCA All-North Region First Team and Northeast-10 Conference All-Conference First Team.
Statistically, she tallied 86 points on a career-high 47 goals and 39 assists as a starter in all 21 games as a senior to lead the Dolphins to the NCAA Semifinals for the second straight year. She added a career-high and team-best 40 ground balls, 18 caused turnovers and three game-winning goals, the second-highest total on the team. She ranked third in the conference and was 19th in the nation with her 39 assists, which are the fifth-most in a single season in the program's history. She ranked fourth in the NE-10 and 14th nationally with her 86 total points, which are the sixth-most in the program's history. Monnat posted at least four points in 13 games, including nine games with at least five points. She had seven games with at least three goals and five games with at least three assists.
She finished her career with 235 points on 103 goals and 132 assists over 73 games played (58 starts), while adding 82 ground balls, 37 draw controls and 31 caused turnovers as the Dolphins went 64-15 during her time on the Heights. Monnat captured two NE-10 regular season championships (2013, 2015) and one NE-10 Championship (2013), along with the aforementioned back-to-back NCAA semifinal appearances.
Her 132 assists are the most in the program's history, while she also holds the single-season record of 59, which she set last year. Monnat's 235 total points are the third-most in the program's history and are the most in the program's Division-II era (2011-present). Her 31 caused turnovers are tied for the 23rd-most, while she ranks in the top-five in the category among attackers. Monnat's 73 games played are tied for the fifth-most in the program's history and are the most by a member of the Class of 2016.
