NE10 Women's Tennis Report: Week 1

Women's Tennis - Week 1

Week 1 - September 12, 2023

NE10 Player of the Week

Katarina Liedbeck, Adelphi
Sophomore | Båstad, Sweden

Subbing in for the sidelined Sanne Selmer Gilje in the season opener, Liedbeck rallied to break serve twice at No. 1 doubles, in a 6-4 come-from-behind victory against Jefferson. She also won the opening set of her singles match 6-3, before her opponent retired. She finished a combined 6-0 between singles (No. 1 and 2) and doubles (No. 1) competition on the week -- which saw three matches in four days.

NE10 Rookie of the Week

Roisin Boyd, Adelphi
Freshman | Leicester, United Kingdom

In the team's first 3-0 start since 2019, Boyd played a crucial role, especially in Thursday's season-opening 4-3 thriller over Jefferson. Trailing 4-2 at #1 doubles, Boyd -- in her first collegiate action -- helped generate two breaks towards earning a 6-4 victory that clinched the doubles point, and followed that up with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 decision over reigning CACC First Team All-Conference player Noelle Frenzel at #2 singles. She proceeded to lose only two more games in singles in conference matches against Franklin Pierce and Saint Michael's. Overall, she went 6-0 this past week.

NE10 Weekly Honor Roll

Caroline Mäder, Assumption (Fr. - Großwallstadt, Germany)
Mäder went 4-0 on the week. In singles action, she won 6-3, 6-0 at Eastern Nazarene before winning 6-0, 6-1 at Gordon. With partner Caitlin Sze, they won 7-5 in top flight doubles at ENC, before winning 8-4 at Gordon.

Valentinna Ferrarini, New Haven (So. - Caxias do Sul, Brazil)
Ferrarini led New Haven to a 7-0 sweep of Saint Michael's in its season and NE10 opening match on Saturday. The sophomore did not allow a point on the day, finishing No. 1 doubles with partner Karim Carreras with a 6-0 sweep of the Purple Knights before matching that performance in singles play with a 6-0. 6-0 decision at No. 1 singles against Emma Gredenhag.

Irene Garbo, Saint Anselm (So. - Assemini, Sardinia, Italy)
Garbo went 4-0 in both singles and doubles on the week at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Garbo posted a straight set victory (6-0, 6-0) in the season-opener against Roger Williams and followed that with a 6-1, 7-5 win this past Saturday against Nichols. In doubles action, Garbo partnered with Abigail Svor for an 8-6 win versus Roger Willaims and with Camila Heredia-Osant for a 7-6 (8-6) win versus Nichols.
