Embrace the Philosophy: Seven Student-Athletes Tabbed as Fall Sport Excellence Award Winners

Six Different Institutions Represented in Sport Excellence Award Recognition.


MANSFIELD, Mass. - The Northeast-10 Conference released its Sport Excellence Award winners for the 2019 fall season on Tuesday afternoon, as seven student-athletes were honored for their remarkable achievements in athletics and in the classroom.

Of the 89 student-athletes that were named to the Academic All-Conference teams on Monday, seven were voted - one from each respective sport - as the top selections among the group. 

To be qualified for Academic All-Conference and Sport Excellence honors, a student-athlete must have started at least half or played in two-thirds of all contests while making significant contributions and maintaining a 3.3 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

One of the league's most prestigious awards, the Sport Excellence Award winners come from six different schools. Saint Rose led all institutions with a pair of selections, as NE10 Women's Soccer Player of the Year Nina Predanic and NE10 Libero of the Year Tina Ceriello were honored with this recongition. 

Adelphi's Paolo Marciano, the NE10 Men's Soccer Player of the Year, and Southern New Hampshire's Laura van der Doorn, the NE10 Field Hockey Player of the Year, were named Sport Excellence Award winners, as well. Rounding out the elite group was American International's Benoit Campion (men's cross country), Stonehill's Sam Curtin (women's cross country) and New Haven's Jelani Green (football).

Sam Curtin Women's Cross Country 3.79 Economics

- Cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field student-athlete H19- cross country captain
- Two top-five finishes this season
- Third at NE10 Championship
- Individual champion at NCAA East Regional Championship (Stonehill?s 4th Regional Individual champion in five years)
- Competed in third NCAA Division II Championship of career
- Best finish in NCAA East Regional, NCAA Championship of career

- NE10 All-Conference first team
- NCAA Division II All-East Region team
- USTFCCCA East Region Athlete of the Year, Individual Champion
- Team: 8th place at New England Championship, 18th NE10 Championship (11th-straight championship), 16th NCAA Division II East Region Championship, helped team to 20th-straight ticket to NCAA Division II Championships

Jelani Green Football 3.56 Psychology Second on the team with 25 catches for 440 yards and three touchdowns. Included was the longest haul of the season in the passing game, an 87-yard catch and run against Assumption. Finished with at least one catch in every game. Racked up 105 yards on three catches against American International, netting a pair of touchdowns among the three catches against the Yellow Jackets. The 105 yards and two touchdowns was a career-high for Greene. CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. NE10 All-Conference Third Team.
Laura van der Doorn Field Hockey 4.0 Master of Science - English as a Foreign Language Started all 22 contests this season. Amassed 35 points on 15 goals and five assists. Tied for the league lead in goals, tied for second in points and tied for 11th in assists. National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-America. NFHCA East Region Player of the Year. NE10 Player of the Year. NE10 All-Conference First Team. NE10 Player of the Week (Sept. 10, Oct. 15).
Paolo Marciano Men's Soccer 3.65 Business Management Paolo Marciano was the centerpiece of head coach Gary Book's offensive attack throughout the 2019 campaign. He tallied a team-high 32 points on the year, by way of 12 goals and eight assists. Marciano led the Northeast-10 Conference in both goals and points, en route to being named the 2019 NE10 Player of the Year. Additionally, with the help of Marciano's left boot, the Adelphi offense ranked No. 1 in the NE10 in goals scored with 47, and second in total points with 127. 2019 United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American, 2019 United Soccer Coaches All-East Region First Team, 2019 D2CCA All-Region First Team, 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
Nina Predanic Women's Soccer 3.75 Business Administration 24 GP/24 GS. 20 goals, 17 assists, 57 points, 9 game-winning-goals for a squad that captured the NE10 regular-season and postseason championships, and advanced to the NCAA National Semifinals. 4th in the country in points and assists, 8thin goals, and 2nd in GWG. Led the NE10 in goals, assists, and points. Tied single-season school records for points and assists, tied for 2nd highest single-season goal total. One of only 15 active players in the country to register 30 career goals and 20 assists. NE10 Player of the Year. D2CCA East Region Player of the Year. NE10 Championship Tournament Most Outstanding Player. United Soccer Coaches first-team Scholar All-America. United Soccer Coaches first-team Scholar All-East. Tina Ceriello Volleyball 4.0 Comm. Sciences and Disorders Led the NE10 in digs per set (5.35) and was second digs (540). 37th in the country in digs per set. Totaled 92 assists and three kills across 101 sets. Aced 22 serves. Registered 20+ digs on 12 occasions. NE10 Libero of the Year. CoSIDA first-team Academic All-America®. CoSIDA Academic All-District® Team. D2CCA second-team All-East. Second-team NE10 All-Conference honors. 2x NE10 Libero of the Week. 5x NE10 weekly honor roll. Team captain.
