Pair of Upsets Mark First Round of NE10 Women's Basketball Championship

Franklin Pierce, Saint Rose Pull-Off Upsets on Friday.


MANSFIELD, Mass. - The Northeast-10 Conference Women's Basketball Championship began with first round games on Friday, highlighted by a pair of upsets from No. 11 Saint Rose and No. 12 Franklin Pierce. The five winners from the first round will advance to Sunday's quarterfinal round. 

Saint Rose knocked-off No. 6 American International, while Franklin Pierce eliminated No. 5 New Haven on the road. Other teams that advanced were No. 4 Bentley, No. 7 Southern Connecticut and No. 8 Pace. All NE10 Championship contests, including Sunday's quarterfinals, will be live streamed on NE10 NOW - the Conference's digital streaming platform. 


No. 4 Bentley 59, No. 13 Saint Michael's 39 - Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass. - After trailing by seven 30 seconds into the second half, fourth-seeded Bentley outscored 13th-seeded Saint Michael's 38-11 the rest of the way to gain a 59-39 first-round win in the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Basketball Championships Friday night on Barbara Stevens Court.

All nine players used by head coach C White scored as Bentley improved to 18-9 and advanced to Sunday's quarterfinals where they will host 12th-seeded Franklin Pierce. The Ravens 9-19, moved on after upsetting New Haven, 57-49.

Freshman post Julia Elie led Bentley's offense with her 12 points on six-of-nine shooting to match her career-high. Junior forward Maggie Witmore followed with nine points and sophomore guard Amanda Kabantu contributed a game-high nine rebounds and eight points. 


No. 12 Franklin Pierce 57, No. 5 New Haven 49 - Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Ines Gimenez Monserrat scored a game-high 24 points on 9-of-19 shooting to help No. 12 Franklin Pierce pull-off a big upset over No. 5 New Haven on Friday night in the Charger Gymnasium as part of the first round of the NE10 Women's Basketball Championship. 

Trailing by nine points at halftime, the Ravens outscored the Chargers in the second half, 37-20, to earn the victory and advance to Sunday's quarterfinals against No. 4-seeded Bentley. New Haven was led by Aurora Deshaies, who tallied a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. 


No. 11 Saint Rose 77, No. 6 AIC 63 - Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The College of Saint Rose earned a first round victory in the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Basketball Championship tonight, with the 11th-seeded Golden Knights defeating American International, the sixth seed, by the score of 77-63. For Saint Rose, Friday's triumph marked the first conference playoff victory for the women's basketball program since the 2011-12 season. 

The Golden Knights earned the upset win behind 9-of-14 shooting from three-point range, matching the team's most made threes in a single-game this season. Junior guard Isabel Sanchez paced Saint Rose with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Sophomore guard Catherine Finnerty and senior forward Makaela Johnson registered 14 points apiece for the Golden Knights. Finnerty also led Saint Rose with six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Freshman forward Aniya McDonald-Perry grabbed six boards as well.


No. 7 Southern Connecticut 72, No. 10 Adelphi 66 - Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - No. 7 Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated No. 10 Adelphi, 72-66, in it Northeast-10 Conference Championship first round matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improve to 18-10 on the year and will advance to the NE10 Championship Quarterfinals. The Owls will head to Worcester, Mass. to face tournament No. 2 seeded Assumption on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m.

The Owls had four shooters who notched double digits in points. Isabella Santoro scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds for to record a double-double the fourth time this season. She has recorded a double-double in the last two games for the Owls. Delaney Connors notched 14 points and went 4-for-6 from three point range while Zoe Amalbert tabbed 13 points. Katie Williamson scored 13 points while collecting seven rebounds. 


No. 8 Pace 60, No. 9 Saint Anselm 48 - Box Score

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Pace had three scorers in double-digits on Friday night, as the No. 8 Setters outpaced No. 9 Saint Anselm by a 60-48 margin in the first round of the NE10 Women's Basketball Championship. Tower Lorde scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the victory.

The Setters got off to a hot start, leading the Hawks by a 27-14 margin after the first quarter. Pace held a 10-point lead at the half and never looked back, advancing to Sunday's quarterfinal against top-seeded Le Moyne. Saint Anselm was led by Melanie Hoyt with 20 points.
