New Haven Partners with Make-A-Wish to Grant Keyshawn a Virtual Shopping Spree

UNH Make-A-Wish with Keyshawn

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chargers Raised Over $11,000 for Make-A-Wish Through Polar Plunge.

TRUMBULL, Conn. – In honor of the University of New Haven Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's (SAAC) recent Make-A-Wish fundraising efforts that raised more than $11,300, the Chargers were offered the opportunity to assist in granting a wish for a local youth, Keyshawn from Manchester, Conn.

Keyshawn, who suffers from a blood disorder, was presented with his virtual shopping spree on Wednesday, December 9 at the Make-A-Wish headquarters in Trumbull, Conn. With basketball as his favorite sport, New Haven's connection with Keyshawn began prior to Thanksgiving when he met with members of the men's basketball teams over zoom.

Following that discussion, the Chargers were offered the opportunity to assist in Keyshawn's wish grant on Wednesday. In partnership with ProPark, New Haven sent a shuttle to Manchester to pick up Keyshawn and his family where they were then provided an escort by the Connecticut State Police to Trumbull.

Once at the Make-A-Wish headquarters, Keyshawn was met by Charger student-athletes, coaches and staff before entering the building to receive all of his virtual shopping spree swag. Among his gifts were a pair of special items; a signed basketball by members of the Golden State Warriors and a signed photo from Steph Curry, his favorite player.

In addition, Manchester Mayor Jay Moran, Director of Athletics at Southern Connecticut State University, provided a video message for Keyshawn, proclaiming, December 9, 2020 as Keyshawn day in Manchester.

New Haven is no stranger to Make-A-Wish as the Chargers SAAC committee has been recognized as the top fundraiser among the 14-team Northeast-10 Conference in four of the last five years. Additionally, the Chargers have had an opportunity to grant two previous wishes, presenting dream cruises to Connor from Darien, Conn. and Joseph from Waterbury, Conn.
