Adelphi’s Madison Apicella Highlights NE10 Women’s Soccer All-Conference Honorees

Women's Soccer All-Conference - 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Apicella Becomes First Player and Rookie of the Year in 28 Years.

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Adelphi's Madison Apicella has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Player and Rookie of the Year – the first student-athlete to accomplish the feat since 1994 – as the league office announced All-Conference honors for women's soccer on Wednesday afternoon.

Franklin Pierce, the No. 2 seed in the NE10 Women's Soccer Championship, had a pair of major award winners in Aino Martikainen as Defensive Player of the Year and Matt Johnson as Coach of the Year. Saint Rose, the top seed in the Championship, had Pia Bozic earn Goalkeeper of the Year honors.

Saint Rose and Franklin Pierce, NE10 co-regular season champions, tied for a league-high seven selections to the All-Conference teams. The Golden Knights, the top seed in the NE10 Women's Soccer Championship, had a conference-best six players earn a place on the First Team.

For a complete list of honorees, please see below. All-Conference teams are broken down by position and voted on by the league's head coaches.

Apicella joins Sharon Polastry as the only two women's soccer players to ever earn NE10 Player and Rookie of the Year in the same season. Polastry played for former NE10 member Quinnipiac in the mid-1990s. Apicella ranked second in goals (7) and points (21) during the regular season, including seven multi-point games, to lead the Panthers to the No. 3 seed in the NE10 Championship.

Martikainen was a force in Franklin Pierce's defense, which held opponents to 0.66 goals per game in the regular season. She was a five-time recipient of the NE10 Defensive Player of the Week honor. Martikainen also contributed on the offensive end with five goals and two assists (12 points) to help the Ravens to a share of the NE10 regular season title. She becomes the first Raven to win Defensive Player of the Year since Marta Turmo in 2018.

Bozic was undefeated in goal for Saint Rose during the regular season, posting a 14-0-3 record – including six complete-game shutouts – to help the Golden Knights capture their second NE10 regular season title in three seasons. She leads all NE10 goalies in save percentage (.889) and goals allowed average (0.38). It is the third-straight season that a Saint Rose goalie earned NE10 Goalkeeper of the Year (Marika Laurendeau in 2019 and 2021).

After leading Franklin Pierce to a share of the regular season title (13-2-2, 10-2 NE10) and a spot in the United Soccer Coaches' Poll rankings, Johnson was named NE10 Coach of the Year by his peers. It is the third time in his career that he has earned Coach of the Year, with the first two coming as head coach at American International (2010, 2012). The Ravens were slotted first in the most recent release of the NCAA East Region rankings.

The NE10 Women's Soccer Championship semifinals are on Thursday and the final is scheduled on Sunday, Nov. 6. Please visit Championship Central for the full bracket, schedule and team rosters.
