MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College softball team, decorated in pink, participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in downtown Manchester on Oct. 21 to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.

Making Strides focuses on honoring breast cancer survivors, promoting awareness about the condition, and raising monetary donations for the American Cancer Society. The walk raised over $260,000 and celebrated the lives of 118 survivors. In total, 1,500 participants made strides to end breast cancer.

In some way, almost everyone has been touched by cancer, however, this event hits especially close to home for two members of the softball team. Both junior Olivia Story and junior Nicole Boucher have family members who have been directly affected by breast cancer.

Story is the daughter of a breast cancer survivor and walked in honor of her hero, her mother. "It is a privilege to walk alongside cancer survivors," stated Story, "since I have witnessed the intense struggle each person faces to overcome the disease."

Boucher, unfortunately, lost her mother to a battle with cancer and deeply connected with the stories of the survivors in a way she never thought would happen. The event was Boucher's first cancer awareness walk. "I would recommend participating in a cancer walk to anyone that has been affected by cancer," said Boucher. "It's a great way to relate to the other people who are going through the same things you are."

Senior Lauren Galavotti spoke to the importance of being a team, both on and off the field. "It's events like this that remind you our team is capable of more than just winning games," commented Galvotti. "It's about the fact that we can really make a difference in the community."

The team made a donation to participate in the walk and is looking forward to taking part in future worthwhile charitable events.
