UMass Lowell's MacDonald and Bentley's
Varsell Garner Spots on Respective First Teams
South Easton, Mass. – Nine Northeast-10 Conference student-athletes were named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division II Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon. The Capital One Academic All-America Teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Graduate student Angus MacDonald of the University of Massachusetts Lowell was named to the Men's First Team, while Bentley University junior Amy Varsell earned a spot on the Women's First Team.
A 10-time All-American, MacDonald has a 3.47 GPA and was an indoor All-American in the 1500 meters and distance medley relay as well as an outdoor All-American in the 1500 meters. He has also helped lead the River Hawks to two NCAA Division II East Regional Championships.
Varsell has a 3.86 GPA and had an outstanding junior year in which she claimed her third and fourth career All-America awards. She was named the Northeast-10 Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and the USTFCCCA Division II East Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year. She also had two top-five finishes at the NCAA Championships and was fourth at the East Regional.
Stonehill College senior Stephen Polito was named to the Men's Second Team with a 3.71 GPA. Four more were named to the Men's Third Team, including UMass Lowell sophomore Scott Boiko (3.48 GPA), Bentley junior John Drago (3.83), Southern Connecticut State University senior Stenson Jean-Baptiste (3.43) and So. Connecticut junior Logan Sharpe (3.49).
Stonehill senior Jill Alves (3.46) and American International College senior Bidemi Balogun (3.31) were named to the Women's Third Team.
The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 5,500 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country.
