Thirteen New Records Set at Outdoor Track & Field Championships

New Haven, Conn. – The second day of the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships saw 13 conference records broken, as Southern Connecticut State University won the men's championship and the University of Massachusetts Lowell claimed the women's title on the campus of So. Connecticut.

The Owl men finished with 219 points to claim its second straight Northeast-10 Outdoor Championship, while the UMass Lowell women (pictured) totaled 189 points to hold off So. Connecticut, which had 180 points.

In the men's 400 meter dash, Adelphi's Mychael Fabio of Adelphi set a new NE-10 record with a time of 46.69, surpassing UMass Lowell's Evan White (46.71) from the 2011 Championships. Fabio was also named the Men's Championship Most Valuable Athlete.

So. Connecticut's Ashley Bell set the new NE-10 benchmark in the 100 meter dash, taking first with a time of 11.91, shattering the previous mark of 12.13 set by New Haven's Shannon Gagne in 2009. For her efforts, the senior was named the Women's Championship Most Valuable Athlete.

Bentley University's Amy Varsell set two new Northeast-10 records on the second day of the 2012 Championships. The junior won the women's 1500 meter run with a time of 4:33.97, breaking the 2009 mark of So. Connecticut's Letecia Taylor. She also set a new record in the 800 meter with a time of 2:11.98, shattering the old record of 2:14.24.

Varsell was also voted the Women's Athlete of the Year, as voted upon by the conference's head coaches. For a full list of individual awards, please see below.

Angus McDonald of UMass Lowell was first in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:47.29, which set a new NE-10 record in the event.

Jason Phillips of American Int'l won the men's 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:07.99 for a new NE-10 mark.

In the men's 800 meter run, So. Connecticut's Josh Perry set a new NE-10 record with a time of 1:51.72, eclipsing the 1:53.08 mark set by Saint Rose's Tyler Gantz in 2010. American International's Curtis Johnson, who finished second, also eclipsed Gantz's record with a time of 1:52.97.

Antoinette Toussaint of UMass Lowell set a new NE-10 mark in the women's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.63.

Sanya Foster of American Int'l set a new Northeast-10 record in the discus throw with a heave of 44.39 meters, breaking the 2009 mark of 42.75 meters, set by So. Connecticut's Yvonne Perkins.

Adelphi sophomore Betsy Eickelberg set a new Northeast-10 record with a time of 17:59.93 in the women's 5000 meter run to break a four-year old mark.

New Northeast-10 marks were also set in both 4x800 meter relays. In the women's race, the Stonehill 'A' relay team of Emily Anderson, Erin Reilly, Maura Ferrarini and Elizabeth LaRegina set the new NE-10 record with a time of 9:24.99. UMass Lowell was second (9:32.78) and So. Connecticut finished third (9:40.20), as all three marks broke the previous NE-10 record of 9:40.42, set by Stonehill in 2009.

For the men, the American Int'l 'A' relay team of Jonathan Hortsman, James Mee, Jeremy Antivo and Curtis Johnson also set a new NE-10 record of 7:44.61, breaking the 2010 mark of 7:45.26, which was set by So. Connecticut.

Michelle Grecni of So. Connecticut finished set a NE-10 record (3.62 meters) in the women's pole vault, eclipsing the old mark of 3.50 meters, set in 2009 by the Owls' Sasha Mathelier.
