Northeast-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships Get Underway

New Haven, Conn. – The 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships got underway on Friday afternoon on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University. The two-day event will come to a conclusion on Saturday.

At the end of the first day, Stonehill College currently leads the way in the men’s standings with 57 points through five events, while So. Connecticut is in first place with 58 points in the women’s standings.

On the track for the men, senior Ryan Saunders from The College of Saint Rose posted the top prelim time (10.99) in the men’s 100 meter dash, while Stonehill sophomore Xavier Harris-Dixon ran a 15.08 prelim time in the men’s 110 meter hurdles. Sophomore Connor Dolan of Adelphi University placed first in the men’s 10K finals with a time of 32:11.93.

In the field on the men’s side, Stonehill’s Corey Thomas took first place in the high jump with a leap of 2.13 meters. American International College senior Maurice Calenda was tops at 7.34 meters in the long jump finals, and sophomore Arthur Guerra of So. Connecticut placed first in the hammer throw (57.56 meters). Stonehill junior John Gelcius took first place in the javelin throw with a heave of 58.56 meters.

On the track for the women, senior Ashley Bell (pictured) of So. Connecticut had the top preliminary time (12.29) in the women’s 100 meter dash, while senior Ashley Zielinski of the University of Massachusetts Lowell took first with a time of 14.85 in the prelims of the women’s 100 meter hurdles. Stonehill junior Caroline McBride earned the Skyhawks 10 points in the standings by placing first (38:29.88) in the women’s 10K finals.

In the field, the University of New Haven’s Calista Hutchinson, a senior, had a first-place showing in the long jump at 1.65 meters and senior Bidemi Balogun of American Int’l had the top hammer throw toss at 56.32 meters. For So. Connecticut, freshman Nyoshee Lowry went for 5.63 meters to claim first in the long jump finals while sophomore Aubrey Dowding took first in the javelin throw (40.52 meters).

The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 5,500 student-athletes.
