Southern Connecticut Men, Stonehill Women Grab Team Titles at Northeast-10 Indoor Track & Field Championships

Ten new conference records set Saturday at 2014 indoor meet 

BOSTON, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University men and Stonehill College women claimed victory at the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday night at Boston’s Reggie Lewis Center.

It marks the first-ever Northeast-10 title for the Stonehill women (pictured), who finished with 173 points, after the Skyhawks had finished runner-up twice in the last four years at the conference championship. They were followed by second-place So. Connecticut with 143 points and the University of New Haven with 93 points.

The So. Connecticut men finished the evening with 193 points, ahead of Stonehill (147) and American International College (117) in the team standings.

New Haven junior Ada Udaya was named the Women’s Most Outstanding Track Performer at the championships after winning in both the 60 and 200 meters. She finished in 7.53 in the 60 prelims before winning the finals in 7.51, while her time of 24.19 in the 200 set a new conference record.

American International College sophomore Michael Biwott was victorious in both the men’s 3,000 run and 5,000 meter run on Saturday evening. He won in 8:35.08 in the 3K before taking the 5K in 14:43.54 on his way to being named the 2014 Northeast-10 Men’s Track Athlete of the Year and the Men’s Most Outstanding Track Performer at the championship.

Udaya and Biwott were also named the 2014 Northeast-10 Women’s and Men’s Track Athletes of the Year on Saturday, as voted upon by the conference’s head coaches. For the complete list of yearly major award winners, please see below.

In all, 10 new Northeast-10 records were set Saturday night at the Reggie.

So. Connecticut's Tresley Dupont set the new men’s weight throw mark with a toss of 62-0.25”, as the junior was also honored as the Men’s Most Outstanding Field Performer at the championship.

Adelphi University junior Angela Mongitore set the new conference mark in the women’s 400 meters with a time of 55.34.

Stonehill junior Emily Anderson set the new Northeast-10 record in winning the women’s 1,000 meter with a time of 2:56.50.

Stonehill senior Chelsea Bishop beat the field in the women’s 5,000 meter with a time of 17:33.14, which set a new conference best.

The So. Connecticut foursome of Jasmine Bien-Aime, Moneque Beckford, Angelique Ross and Shatajah Wattely set the new conference mark in the women’s 4x400 meter relay, finishing in 3:51.75.

Both distance medley relay records fell as well, as the Franklin Pierce University quartet of Jon Holmes, Matthew Carpenter, Dage Minors and Antoine Gisore finished with a time of 10:14.46 for a Ravens program that is in just its second year of existence.

So. Connecticut junior Michelle Grecni broke her own conference record in the women’s pole vault at 12-09.50”.

Fellow So. Connecticut junior Michael Cameron set the new Northeast-10 standard in the men’s shot put with a heave of 56-3.75”.

So. Connecticut senior Jimm Guerrier won both the men’s 60 (6.93) and 400 meters (49.07).

Bentley sophomore Edy-Elliott Uthman-Olukokun won the men’s 200 meters with a time of 22.55.

Stonehill senior Xavier Dixon took the men’s 60 meter hurdles finals (8.00), while American Int’l freshman Akayla Anderson won the women’s 60 hurdles in 8.74 seconds.

In the 500 meter run, So. Connecticut senior Logan Sharpe took the men’s final in 1:03.46, while Stonehill sophomore Jordan Gray won the women’s (1:14.83).

In the 800 meter run, Stonehill junior Patrick Cooney won the men’s final with a time of 1:53.56. The Skyhawks’ Sarah Wilson was victorious in the women’s final (2:13.21).

Owls sophomore Dieter Gutbrod took the men’s 1,000 with a time of 2:29.20.

Franklin Pierce University junior Antoine Gisore took the men’s mile in 4:15.79, while Bentley senior Amy Varsell won the women’s mile with a time of 4:58.59.

American Int’l grad student Jeptui Cherutich took the women’s 3,000 meters in 10:33.34.

Stonehill took the men’s 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:24.15.

In the 4x800 meter relay, Franklin Pierce won the men’s event (7:56.07) while Stonehill took the women’s race in 9:47.49.

Stonehill’s Nick Staley took the men’s high jump (6-10.25”), while So. Connecticut’s Brittany Brown took the women’s high jump with a leap of 5-6.50”.  Brown was recognized as the Women’s Most Outstanding Field Performer of the championship for her efforts.

So. Connecticut’s Nelson Laskoski won the men’s pole vault, while American Int’l’s Ricky Williams and Stonehill’s Maria Curit won the men’s and women’s long jumps, respectively.

In the triple jump, New Haven’s Briana Conyers won the women’s event and So. Connecticut’s Michael Lee was victorious among the men. 

Sonja Campbell
of the Owls was the winner in the women’s shot put, and Stonehill’s Elizabeth Bashir (52-9.50) won women’s weight throw competition.

Next week’s New England Championships get underway Saturday, February 28 at noon, while the 2014 NCAA Division II Championships take place March 14-15 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
