Three-day meet gets underway at Southern Connecticut on Thursday

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Northeast-10 Conference winter championship season kicks off on Thursday morning as the 2013 Swimming & Diving Championships get underway from New Haven, Conn. The three-day meet will run Thursday through Saturday, February 2 on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University's Hutchinson Natatorium.

Be sure to follow the Northeast-10 on Twitter (@TheNortheast10) for all the latest news and highlights from the meet, and updated results will be provided at northeast10.org.

So. Connecticut, which swept the championships a year ago, has been selected to repeat in both the men’s and women’s events, as voted upon by the conference’s head coaches in a pre-championship poll released earlier this week.

The Owls men’s team will be competing for its ninth conference crown in 10 years, while the women’s program, led by 2012 NCAA Division II Women's Swimmer of the Year Amanda Thomas, looks for its 10th consecutive Northeast-10 title.

Thomas, a senior and three-time national champion, owns Northeast-10 records in the 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly, and has also been a part of two conference record-setting relay teams in her career.

Le Moyne College freshman Tara O’Donnell and Assumption College junior Monique Haney will both take on Thomas in the 200 IM, while Haney will also compete for the 400 IM crown.

O’Donnell also owns top-seed times in the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke entering the championship.

For the So. Connecticut men, sophomore Raymond Cswerko owns the top-seed times in the 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

This year’s diving competition will also boast a high level of talent on each side. For the men, Bentley University’s Colton Bridge, Le Moyne’s Josh Byrne and Adelphi’s Jalen Jennings headline the diving events. For the women, So. Connecticut’s Jessica Ranzo and Ashley Thomas, Bentley’s Nicola Mancini and Abby Mathews, and Pace University’s Jenny Palladino among others will all compete on the board.

An adult all-day ticket is $10, while per-session tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for both youths (under 18) and seniors. The price is $1 for students of Northeast-10 institutions (with ID) and heat sheets will be available for $1. Championship t-shirts will also be available for purchase ($15) on site.

Preliminaries are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. each day, with diving competition set to begin 60 minutes following the conclusion of prelims. Finals are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. all three nights at Hutchison Natatorium, which features an eight-lane pool, one- and three-meter diving boards and a Colorado timing system.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country. Leading the way in the classroom, on the field and within the community, the Northeast-10 is proud of its comprehensive program and the experience it provides student-athletes.
