Four Northeast-10 Conference records broken on Thursday

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University has a lead in both the men’s and women’s meets at the conclusion of Day One at the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Swimming  Diving Championships, hosted by Southern Connecticut State University at Hutchison Natatorium.

In the men’s standings, the Owls have a 264-188 lead over Bentley University, while the So. Connecticut women own a 298-263 lead over Bentley.

Four conference records were also broken on Thursday night, as were a pair of pool records.

In the men’s 200 IM, So. Connecticut sophomore Raymond Cswerko set a new Northeast-10 record with a time of 1:49.51, besting the previous mark (1:52.86) by more than three seconds. The mark also set a new pool record, a mark that was set over 25 years ago (1:50.23 by Chris Weismann in 1987). The time also missed a NCAA A-cut time by 1.15 seconds.

So. Connecticut’s Amanda Thomas won the women’s 200 IM with a time of 2:02.73, while Le Moyne freshman Tara O’Donnell (2:06.23) and Saint Rose senior Caitlin Brauer (2:07.04) both joined Thomas in reaching NCAA B-cut times.

So. Connecticut set a new conference record in the men’s 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:24.91. The foursome included Jared Thurston, Travis Burke, Dan Elliot and Cswerko. So. Connecticut also won the women’s 200 freestyle relay, as Anna Pleban, Christina Lavery, Nicole Caron and Elizabeth Hess finished with a time of 1:38.91.

So. Connecticut freshman Louis Geist set a new conference mark in the men’s 500 freestyle, posting a time of 4:34.70. Saint Rose junior Kyle Wilson (4:39.32) and Pace’s Dogus Akay (4:39.43) also had NCAA B-cut times.

It was a tight race if there ever was one in the women’s 500 freestyle, as So. Connecticut senior Meghan Fay and Assumption junior Monique Haney tied for first place with matching B-cut times of 5:06.44. Bentley sophomore Nadine Edwards was just off the pace at 5:06.93 for third place, which was also good for a B-cut time.

In the men’s 50 freestyle, Pace’s Kevin Dickson took first place with a time of 21.33, while Pleban finished first in the women’s 50 free with a time 24.65. 

So. Connecticut won the women’s 400 yard medley relay, as Rachel Smolensky, Courtney Silva, Christine Katrenya and Fay were victorious with a time of 3:53.46.

In the men’s 400 yard medley relay, So. Connecticut took first place with a time of 3:28.37. 

In the diving portion of Thursday’s events, Le Moyne freshman Josh Byrne won the men’s 3-meter diving competition with a score of 439.35, defeating Adelphi freshman Jalen Jennings (433.60).

Bentley freshman Nicola Mancini took home the women’s 1-meter competition with a score of 431.70, narrowly ousting Pace freshman Jenny Palladino, who posted a score of 430.35. Mancini’s mark set a new Northeast-10 and pool record, which previously had been 413.30.

The Northeast-10 Championships continue on Friday morning, with preliminaries scheduled for 10:00 a.m. The the men’s 1-meter diving competition will take place in the afternoon followed by swimming finals at 6:00 p.m.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes.
