Bentley Men & Southern Women Lead NE10 Swimming & Diving Championships After Day Two

WORCESTER, Mass. – Through two days of competition, the Southern Connecticut women and the Bentley men still sit in first at the Northeast 10 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, held at WPI. 

The Owls accumulated 358 points thus far, just ahead of second place Assumption who has 329 points and Bentley with 305. Pace is in a distant third with 173. On the men's side, Bentley opened up a lead of nearly 100 points on Southern Connecticut, as the Falcons have 361.5 to the Owls' 267.5. Le Moyne is third with 186 points while Pace has 146. 

The Assumption women's NE10 Champion 200 free relay set a new NE10 record with their time of 1:35.01, breaking the previous record of 1:36.42 which was set by SCSU back in 2016. 

WOMEN'S RECAP 

A stellar second day of competition saw Southern Connecticut capture three Northeast 10 Championships, and five medals in five events, to carry its lead through the second day of the 2020 Northeast 10 Conference Championship competition. The Owls currently hold a 345-to-329 lead against  reigning conference champion Assumption heading into the third day of competition. 

Seniors Erin Leirey (200 IM) and Avery Fornaciari (500 Freestyle) captured a pair of individual championships before teaming with Morgan Fernald and Alina Tucker to win the 400 Medley Relay Championship. 

Leirey took the 200 Individual Medley Championship with a time of 2:05.64, winning convincingly against second-place Pace by almost two seconds. Through the first two days, Leirey has two NE10 Championships.

Fornaciari took the 500 Freestyle title with a time of 4:59.44, while Littleton took the bronze in the event with a third-place finish at 5:04.58. Fornaciari now has two NE10 Championships and three medals overall. 

In addition, the 200 Freestyle Relay team comprised of Fernald, Tucker, Megan Garner and Emily Darroch took second place with a time of 1:36.30. The Owls' time was good enough for the NE10 record that stood prior to the event, but finished second behind Assumption's relay team that posted a time of 1:35.01.

MEN'S RECAP

Bentley opened Friday evening by taking gold in the 200 free relay behind the quartet of Paul Homorodean, Alper Alkaya, Clayton Bennice and Mark Zoda. The Falcons also took the B-Final as well. 

In the 500 Free, Bentley took two of the top three spots as Daniel Sausto finished in 4:42.60, just two seconds out of first, and was followed by Michael Motisi. SCSU's Evan Bombery won the event in 4:40.62. Bentley again used its depth in the 200 IM, taking spots 2-3-4 in the final, as the Falcons were led by Anthony Vizental with his time of 1:52. 13. Chandler Tucker won the event in 1:51.77, while Tanner Eisenhut and Zach Papsco placed third and fourth. 

Saint Michael's Connor Hopkins claimed the NE10 Title in the 50 free with his time of 20.55 seconds and was followed by Mark Zoda and Paul Homorodean in second and third. The night concluded with Southern capturing victory in the 400 medley relay with its time of 3:23.97. The Owls edged Bentley, who had a time of 3:24.09, while Le Moyne and Pace rounded out the top four in the event.
