FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Second NCAA Title for Stonehill in Three Seasons.
"On This Date" in 2005, Stonehill women's lacrosse captured the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse National Championship with a 13-10 victory over West Chester, beating the Golden Rams on their own campus to claim its second national title in three seasons.
Formerly known as the Chieftains, Stonehill was led by Most Valuable Player Lauren Stone. She made 10 saves against West Chester, helping her team clinch a perfect 21-0 season on its way to hoisting the NCAA trophy. Colby Confer netted a hat trick in the victory against West Chester to lead the scoring.
In 2003, the Chieftains bested Longwood, 9-8, in the final seconds to capture their first national title in program history. Just two years later, they were back in the final and won their second in three seasons.
Head coach Michael Daly, who led the Chieftains for the first nine years of the program's history, was at the helm for both NCAA titles – the first in school history – while also going on to earn a trio of DII National Coach of the Year honors (1999, 2003, 2005).
In the 2005 season, Stonehill eclipsed West Chester's NCAA record for goals in one season with 394 – a record that has since been surpassed, but still sits in the top 10 all-time of scoring outputs in a single season by a Division II women's lacrosse program.
