WALTHAM, Mass. --- Senior All-America Allyson Bunce (East Dennis/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS), the tournament MVP for the second straight year, had a goal and an assist as Bentley College captured its sixth straight Northeast-10 Conference field hockey playoff championship with a 4-0 win over St. Michael's College Sunday afternoon.
Bentley, unscored upon in 12 NE-10 tournament games all-time and 59-1 in its last 60 home games, improved to 20-1 overall while St. Michael's, which shared the regular season conference championship with the Falcons, fell to 14-5 after having its 11-game winning streak halted.
A second-effort shot by junior Kristyn Bates (Greenfield/Greenfield HS) with 11:45 left in the opening half proved to be the game-winner. The unassisted goal was her ninth of the season, and fourth game-winner.
Bunce, who was presented with the NE-10 Player of the Year award after the game, made it 2-0 62 seconds before intermission, rifling a bullet into the cage off a penalty corner. Sophomore Kara Bouvier (West Brookfield/Quaboag Reg. HS) assisted on Bunce's conference-leading 17th goal (and 70th career).
NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Year Meghan Scalley (Beverly) kept it a two-goal game when she denied a penalty stroke taken by Bentley senior co-captain Alicia Cabrera (Lexington/Lexington HS) in the fifth minute of the second half.
The Falcons, who attacked St. Michael's with 18 second-half shots, added to their lead with goals by juniors Carolyn Bolster (Walpole/Walpole HS), with 18:02 to play, and Kristin Cronin (Tewksbury/Tewksbury HS), with 3:44 remaining. Sophomore Kristen Godfrey (Holliston/Holliston HS) assisted on Bolster's third of the year and Bunce set up Cronin's first career goal.
Posting her 12th shutout of the season and lowering her conference-best goals against average to 0.51 was sophomore Liz Novis (Watertown/Watertown HS), who only had to make three saves as the Falcons kept the ball in the St. Michael's end most of the day. Bentley dominated the shots, 28-4, and had a commanding 14-2 edge in penalty corners.
The four goals was the most allowed all season by St. Michael's, whose defense featured both Scalley and the NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year (Angela Potts). In fact, the Knights had allowed only three goals total since losing to Bentley 3-1 Sept. 18. Scalley finished with 18 saves.
Both teams are hopeful of receiving a berth to next weekend's NCAA Division II Championships later this afternoon. The field and the site will be announced tonight.
