Volleyball Blog: Adelphi Team Trip to Alaska

By Emily Dorko, Adelphi University

After this past summer and preseason, I now have a couple more things to check off my bucket list:

1. get an internship.
2. turn 21.
3. Go to Alaska.
4. Spend 24 hours in khaki pants.

While the last one was not necessarily on a list of things I wished to complete, it happened a couple of weeks ago. We were all glad to come back this August, bright-eyed, tan and ready to get our butts kicked by preseason one last time. Yes, it is hard to believe - I'm finally a senior. Six seasons in and read to go all out for my final year.

But anyways back to August: Since we found out in the spring semester where we were headed in the fall, we were excited. Good thing one of our incoming freshmen is from Alaska, because our greatest concern was what the weather would be like.

After reroutes, delays and almost missing our connecting flight in Phoenix, Adelphi volleyball finally made it to Alaska. The view from my hotel room was something that looked straight out of a picture book. Never did I think I was going to see legitimate SNOW CAPPED mountains -- but there they were, waiting for the sun to come up.

Once more let me back track. I mentioned above that I spent 24 consecutive hours in khakis. Normally, the trip from the east coast to Alaska is approximately 10 hours. So 8AM Tuesday (New York time) I donned my khaki pants and polo. We got delayed several times and we did not arrive in Anchorage until 4AM Wednesday (Alaska time), which was 8AM East Coast time, hence the 24 hours in khakis.

At the Alaska Anchorage SpringHill Suites Invitational, the competition was fierce, the temperature was cold, and the view was out of this world. But for the most part, my team and I are ready to start our season at home. Please follow this blog as we (our six seniors) start upon our last chance at a championship!
