Winners to be announced at next
month’s year-end conference banquet

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – The Northeast-10 Conference is pleased to announce its 2012-13 Woman and Man of the Year finalists.

All nominees and finalists are senior student-athletes. The winners will be named at the conference’s annual year-end banquet on Monday, June 3 in Falmouth, Mass.

The three finalists for the Woman of the Year are Saint Anselm College’s Allyn Doyle, The College of Saint Rose’s Caitlin Brauer and Southern New Hampshire University’s Daniela Abruzzese

The three finalists for the Man of the Year Award are Bentley University’s Weston Zeiner, Saint Michael’s College’s Chris Moskal and Stonehill College’s Dana Borges

Doyle, a captain on the Hawks cross country team, is a Psychology major with a 3.95 GPA. The Merrimack, N.H. native was selected as Saint Anselm’s female Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this month, and is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student Athlete Honor Society and both the Psychology and Spanish National Honor Society.

She is a two-time member of the Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference Team, has been selected to four Northeast-10 Commissioner’s Honor Rolls and has twice received USTFCCCA Division II All-Academic Status. Doyle serves as the Director of Spirit for the Campus Activities Board, has participated in Spring Break Alternatives in Honduras and New York and is a Presidential Scholar.

“In my time at Saint Anselm College, running has put in me in touch with the human spirit and has inspired me to become a leader in many ways,” said Doyle. “I have come to recognize the inherent worth and dignity of every person I encounter.”

Brauer, who is a four-time NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships qualifier, is also a two-time All-America selection in the 400 individual medley. The Clifton Park, N.Y. native has a 3.75 GPA as an Accounting major at Saint Rose, where she became the first female to ever represent the school at NCAAs.

The team captain also received the 2012-13 Northeast-10 Sport Excellence Award for women’s swimming & diving and is a three-time Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference honoree, as well as a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American. She garnered Capital One District 1 Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA in 2011-12. Brauer, a Delta Mu Delta Honor Society member, has also participated in continuing service projects and completed her MBA this spring.

“Above all, I was able to balance the demands of academics because I was able to enjoy my passion for athletics,” said Brauer. “With the help of my teammates, professors and coaches, I also learned that modesty is a key driver of success. Success is not measured by how much someone has accomplished, but rather how gracefully they act when they achieve those accomplishments.”

Abruzzese, a women’s soccer team captain and a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), carries a 3.82 GPA as a Business Administration major and also received her Associate’s degree in Fashion Merchandising. She is a two-time Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference honoree, a two-time Capital One Academic All-District honoree, and was also a Capital One Academic All-America choice in 2012.

On the field, the Parsippany, N.J. native was named Third Team All-Conference three different times at So. New Hampshire, where she is second in program history in games played (79). Abruzzese is also a member of Delta Mu Delta and participated in one-time service projects in Africa (March 2011) and Nicaragua (Jan. 2012).

“Being accepted into two different prestigious volunteer programs were milestones in my life with an everlasting effect,” Abruzzese said about her community service trips. “To help change the lives of children in both countries has humbled me and reiterated the importance of giving back.”

The Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) Council selects the Northeast-10 Woman of the Year, and that individual will then be put forth as the conference’s nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year.

Zeiner, a men’s soccer student-athlete with a 3.84 GPA as an Accountancy major, was named Bentley’s Outstanding Male Senior Athlete last month. The North Granby, Conn. native and Falcons’ team captain has twice received Capital One Academic All-America honor and is a three-time Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference honoree. He also received the Northeast-10 Scholar Athlete Sport Excellence Award for men’s soccer this past season and has participated in community service initiatives.

On the field, Zeiner was selected First Team All-Conference by the league’s head coaches three different years and was also named the 2012 Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year. He finished his career with 15 goals and eight assists for 38 points.

“While my achievements have been acknowledged in many ways, my involvement with community service initiatives has kept me grounded and reinforced my understanding that I am a very fortunate individual,” said Zeiner. “It provides me great joy when I can reciprocate by providing selfless support to those in my community.”

Moskal, a men’s tennis student-athlete, carries a 3.89 GPA as a Media Studies, Journalism & Digital Arts major at Saint Michael’s. The Springfield, Mass. native served as a team captain in 2012-13 and has been named to the Northeast-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll six times.

Moskal has also taken part in numerous service projects and leadership positions, including serving as a coordinator for the Winooski Youth Connection Afterschool and Senior Citizens Outreach programs. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa Tau Alpha, Theta Alpha Kappa, Delta Epsilon Sigma and Chi Alpha Sigma, and also received the Saint Michael’s Politi Study Abroad Scholarship.

“I find that my experiences outside of the classroom have really shaped who I am today,” said Moskal. “I’ve learned many things, especially relating to the responsibility involved in such leadership roles and the importance of choosing positions that you are passionate about and willing to commit to."

Borges, an ice hockey student athlete at Stonehill, is a Criminology major with a 3.72 GPA. The Taunton, Mass. native and team captain received the Edward E. Martin Scholar-Athlete Award last month, which is given to the top male and female scholar-athletes from the Stonehill senior class. Borges was also a 2011-12 Capital One Academic All-District At-Large selection, as well as a two-time Northeast-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence winner and three-time Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference choice.

He also took part in SAAC, Life Skills, Team IMPACT and served as developer and chairperson of the SAAC/MIAA Event this year. Borges also completed an internship with the Public Defenders Office in Brockton, Mass. as a junior and visited the White House on a political science field trip last June.

On the ice, Borges led the Northeast-10 with 37 points on 15 goals and 22 assists in 2012-13, a year in which he was a First Team All-Conference selection and selected as a Joe Concannon Award finalist, which recognizes the best American-born player in New England playing at the Division II or III level. For his career, Borges totaled 87 points for the Skyhawks.

“Whether it has been in the classroom, on the ice, or in the community, I have always been determined to go above and beyond the expected,” said Borges. “My one goal has been to make a difference, and I am happy to see that I have made a positive impact within the Stonehill community.”

This year marks the inaugural Northeast-10 Man of the Year Award.
