South Easton, Mass. – The Northeast-10 Conference announced its nine Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winners for the 2014 spring athletic season in the sports of baseball, golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

The student-athletes garnering recognition are Southern New Hampshire University’s Derrick Sylvester (baseball); Bentley University’s Harry Kirkpatrick (golf); Adelphi University’s Nick Watson (men’s lacrosse); Devan Crimi (women’s lacrosse); and Katie Andrews (softball), American International College’s Cassio Schwab (men’s tennis); and Ana Paula Simoes (women’s tennis); Stonehill College’s Trent Fontanella (men’s outdoor track & field); and Elizabeth LaRegina (women’s outdoor track & field).

The conference’s Sport Excellence Awards recognize student-athletes that have excelled both on the field of play and in the classroom. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least two consecutive semesters of full-time enrollment at their current institution, two total years of athletic eligibility, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of a 3.30.

Sylvester, who was recently selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Major League Baseball draft, graduated from So. New Hampshire in May with a 3.905 grade point average. The right-handed starting pitcher posted a 9-2 record with a 2.59 ERA in 2014, earning him first team All-Conference laurels. Derrick, a two-time Capital One Academic All-America, majored in psychology and finished his career with the Penmen as the school’s leader in wins (20).

Kirkpatrick becomes the second straight Bentley student-athlete to earn this recognition as former teammate Matt Michel won the award last year. A graduate student earning his master’s degree in Accountancy, Kirkpatrick posted a 3.60 GPA during his undergrad studies, and a 3.46 in his graduate courses. Harry was named to Bentley’s Dean's List five times and the President's List once. He was also named to the 2014 Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference Team, and shot a career-best 78.4 stroke average for a team-best 25.5 rounds.
Nick Watson is one of three student-athletes from Adelphi to earn sport excellence awards this spring. He helped lead the Panthers to the national semifinals and a Northeast-10 Conference title this past spring. A graduate student originally from England, Watson posted a 4.0 GPA as an undergrad and currently has a 3.882 GPA in his graduate classes, while studying engineering. Nick scored 38 goals this season and was named a USILA Scholar-All-American and a USILA All-American. He was also named to the CoSIDA Capital One All-District men’s lacrosse team, and was named to the NE-10 Academic All-Conference Team.

Adelphi’s Devan Crimi, pictured, adds this accolade to a long list of accolades during her decorated career. The attacker led the Panthers to a perfect season, culminating in a national championship in May, and was named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year. Crimi, who majored in Business Management, registered a 3.7 GPA, and set the school record for goals in a season this spring with 83. Devan was named an IWLCA First-Team All-American and an IWLCA First-Team All-Region selection. She was also an NE-10 Woman of The Year Finalist, and was named to the 2014 Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference Team.

The third Adelphi student-athlete to win a sport excellence award this spring is Katie Andrews of the Panthers softball team. Andrews posted a 3.736 GPA, while majoring in Business.  She was named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year and helped lead Adelphi to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. On the mound, Andrews went 17-10 with a 2.87 ERA, while at the plate; she hit .371 and drove in 31 runs. Katie was a Daktronics First-Team All-Region selection, and was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District team. Recently, she was named to the 2014 NE-10 Academic All-Conference team.

Student-athletes from American Int’l swept Sport Excellence honors in the sports of men’s and women’s tennis with Cassio Schwab winning on the men’s side, while Ana Paula Simoes earned the distinction on the women’s side.

Schwab, a two-time NE-10 Player of the Year selection, had a 3.66 GPA with a concentration in Political Science. This season he was undefeated at No. 1 Singles, and was the 13th-ranked player in the East Region. He was named to the 2014 Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference Team a couple weeks ago.

Simoes, a sophomore from Brazil, went a combined 21-5 in singles and doubles play this past season. She had a 3.89 GPA, while majoring in Psychology at American Int’l, and was also named to the 2014 Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference team.

Similarly to the sports of men’s and women’s tennis, it was student-athletes from Stonehill that earned both distinctions in the sports of men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.

Trent Fontanella, pictured, a senior majoring in Criminology and Psychology, was chosen as the recipient of the honor in men’s outdoor track and field. Fontanella recently graduated from Stonehill with a 3.7 GPA. He was named to the Capital One Academic All-District I first team, and was selected to receive Stonehill's Edward E. Martin Scholar-Athlete Award. Trent was named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll each of his eight semesters, and was an Athletic Director's Honor Roll selection seven times. He was also named to the 2014 Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference Team.

Elizabeth LaRegina, a classmate of Fontanella’s, graduated in May with a 3.85 GPA and a concentration in Psychology. LaRegina was named USTFCCCA All-East Region for the 800-Meter Run (2:15.75/NE-10 Championships) as well as the 1500-Meter Run (4:34.48-New England Championships-School Record/NCAA provisional qualifier).  Off the track, Elizabeth was a two-time Capital One Academic All-District I first team selection and a two-time ADA Academic Achievement Award Recipient.  She was also named NE-10 Academic All-Conference five times.
