LOWELL, MA (May 28, 2008) – The UMass Lowell Department of
Athletics is presenting a free symposium, “Opening the Door
the College Sports: The College Recruiting Process from A to
Z,” Thursday, June 5 (7:00) at the University’s Campus
Recreation Center.
Consistent with the department’s theme, “Reaching
Beyond the Games,” the symposium is open to members of the
high school community – coaches, student-athletes,
administrators and parents – and is designed to aid
college-bound student-athletes in the transition to intercollegiate
athletics.
The symposium is spearheaded by UML men’s soccer coach Ted
Priestly, who is one of several speakers at the event.
“Many high school student-athletes find themselves unsure
and searching for direction on the path from high school to
college, looking for answers to various questions and seeking
guidance,” Priestly said. “Simply, just being a good
athlete is no longer enough to play sports in college. To do so,
student-athletes must informed, prepared and engaged in the
transition. This seminar is designed to help them.”
Scheduled speakers and topics include Dana Skinner, UML’s
Director of Athletics, on “Character Counts;” Dr. Joan
Lehoullier, Senior Associate Director of Athletics, on
“Balance for the Student-Athlete;” Kerri Mead,
UML’s Co-Director of Admissions, on “The Admissions
Process;” and Richard Kenney, Director of Compliance, on
“NCAA Eligibility.”
Also slated to speak is Chris Foye, UML’s Assistant Athletic
Trainer, on “Performance Enhancement;” Blaise
MacDonald, Hockey Coach on “So This is Division I;”
Shannon Hlebichuk, Field Hockey Coach on “Finding the Right
Fit;” and Priestly on “Dream Big.”
