Despite the cold weather outside, it was warm inside the Ross
Sports Center on Saturday, January 24, 2009, as Saint Michael's
held the inaugural Purple Knight Chili Cook-Off. Fans who attended
the basketball doubleheader versus the University Of New Haven also
got to sample delicious chili recipes created by various Saint
Michael's sports teams and administrative staff. The fans voted on
the women's volleyball team's chili as the best of the bunch!
The day also was "Vermont Food Bank Day" at the Ross Sports
Center. All fans that brought a donation to the Vermont Food Bank
were entered into a raffle for authentic Saint Michael's men's and
women's basketball jerseys. Also, those that donated three or more
items at the door received free admission to the basketball
doubleheader. All told, 522 pounds of food were collected for the
Vermont Food Bank, translating into 640 meals for Vermonters in
need!
Thank you to all who took part in Saturday's activities, which
were part of the NCAA Division II Community Engagement Initiative
(for more information, visit http://www.diicommunity.org). Special
thanks also go out to Caroline Connors, an intern with the Saint
Michael's athletic department over the winter, and a sports
management major at Endicott College, who organized the event.
