ESSEX, Vt. – For the second
consecutive year, Adelphi University has claimed the Northeast-10
Conference Presidents’ Cup, as Danny
McCabe,Director of Athletics & Campus Recreation,
accepted the 2013-14 award Monday night during the
conference’s yearend banquet at the Essex Resort & Spa in
Vermont.
Adelphi, which sat in third place in the cup standings following
the winter season, jumped into the top spot after earning a
league-best 75 points this spring, which included Northeast-10
regular-season titles in men’s and women’s lacrosse and
a second-place finish in women’s tennis.
“We are thrilled to win back-to-back Northeast-10
Presidents’ Cup trophies,” said McCabe. “This is
a special award because it recognizes the collective work and
commitment from so many people.”
The Panthers also won the Northeast-10 Golf Championship back in
September, claimed the Southwest Division regular-season title in
women’s basketball, and finished third in the women’s
soccer standings.
“We share this award with everyone at Adelphi, including
President Dr. Robert A. Scott, the Board
of Trustees, and all of the school’s staff and faculty that
contribute to the positive and rewarding student-athlete experience
at the University,” added McCabe.
The Presidents' Cup is presented annually to signify overall
athletic excellence in the Northeast-10. The honor is awarded to
the institution that compiles the most cumulative points, based on
finishes in the regular-season standings, from all of its programs
competing in league championships.
Points for men's and women's cross country, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, and men's golf are awarded based on placement in those sports’ respective conference championships.
Adelphi's highlight of the 2013-14 academic year was of course
its women's lacrosse team (pictured, right) posting a perfect 22-0
record en route to the NCAA Division II national championship, as
the Panthers defeated Lock Haven, 7-5, in the title game.
