South Easton, Mass. – The Purple Knights of Saint
Michael’s College are the preseason favorite to win the
Northeast-10 Ice Hockey Regular Season Championship, as voted by
the conference’s head coaches. They received 24 points with
four first-place votes.
Coming in second are the Hawks of Saint Anselm College who received
22 points and picked up the final two first-place votes. Stonehill
College (16) and Southern New Hampshire University (14) finished
third and fourth respectively.
Franklin Pierce University (9) and Assumption College (5) round out
the bottom of the poll respectively.
Last year, Saint Anselm and Saint Michael’s shared the
Regular Season Championship and faced off in the Northeast-10
Championship Final. The Purple Knights raced onto a 5-1 victory to
claim the Northeast-10 championship for the first time since
2004.
The 2008-09 regular season gets underway tomorrow with Assumption
taking on Worcester State. The first conference contest of the
season is on Friday, November 14 with Assumption traveling to
Franklin Pierce. The 2008-09 Northeast-10 Championship is slated
for February 28 and will conclude with the championship game on
March 7.
With 15 member institutions the Northeast-10 is the second largest
NCAA Division II athletic conference in the nation. Its 23
championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500
student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II
conference.
