South Easton, Mass. – The Purple Knights of Saint Michael’s College are the preseason favorite to win the Northeast-10 Ice Hockey Regular Season Championship, as voted by the conference’s head coaches. They received 24 points with four first-place votes.

Coming in second are the Hawks of Saint Anselm College who received 22 points and picked up the final two first-place votes. Stonehill College (16) and Southern New Hampshire University (14) finished third and fourth respectively.

Franklin Pierce University (9) and Assumption College (5) round out the bottom of the poll respectively.

Last year, Saint Anselm and Saint Michael’s shared the Regular Season Championship and faced off in the Northeast-10 Championship Final. The Purple Knights raced onto a 5-1 victory to claim the Northeast-10 championship for the first time since 2004.

The 2008-09 regular season gets underway tomorrow with Assumption taking on Worcester State. The first conference contest of the season is on Friday, November 14 with Assumption traveling to Franklin Pierce. The 2008-09 Northeast-10 Championship is slated for February 28 and will conclude with the championship game on March 7.

With 15 member institutions the Northeast-10 is the second largest NCAA Division II athletic conference in the nation. Its 23 championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II conference.
