ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose is pleased to announce
that Chris Gilmore has been hired as the head men’s soccer
coach. Gilmore, who has spent 23 years in the coaching ranks, is
the eighth mentor in the program’s 26-year history.
“Chris brings a wealth of experience in competing both at the
NAIA and Division II levels and within the New England
Region,” said Saint Rose Athletics Director Cathy Haker.
“His goal is to transform the Saint Rose men’s soccer
program into a competitive and respected entity in the Northeast-10
Conference.”
Previously, Gilmore served as head men’s soccer coach at
Green Mountain College (VT) from 1982-2004. He compiled a
273-142-30 record in 23 seasons, 18 of which he also doubled as the
Director of Athletics. Gilmore was instrumental in leading Green
Mountain through the four year transition from NAIA to NCAA, which
was completed in 2003. He was also responsible for implementing six
new intercollegiate athletic programs in men’s lacrosse,
men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and
women’s tennis and men’s golf.
Gilmore’s teams at Green Mountain chalked up three undefeated
regular-seasons, four NAIA Regional Championships, five NAIA
National Tournament appearances and seven Mayflower Conference
titles. He was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America Coach of the Year in 1996 after guiding the Eagles to an
undefeated regular season and a trip to the NAIA National
Tournament.
Furthermore, Gilmore garnered NAIA Northeast Regional Coach of the
Year plaudits on four occasions and received Coach of the Year
honors from the Mayflower Conference six times.
“I am very excited to take this position and look forward to
becoming part of the formidable Northeast-10 Conference,”
said Gilmore. “We have advantages at Saint Rose that will
help us compete at a high level in this league down the road. We
want to expand our recruiting base and tap into the rich soccer
tradition of the Capital Region.”
Gilmore, who has a bachelor’s degree in physical education
from Plymouth State University (’81) and a masters from
Eastern Illinois (’82) in physical education with a
concentration in athletic administration, is aiming to lead the
Golden Knights ascent through the NE-10. Saint Rose finished just
1-15-1 overall and 1-11-1 in league play a year ago and is expected
to return 16 players from that club.
