DeMontier, Waters, Younes remain
linked
long after high school

Tara DeMontier and Ashley Waters continue to one-up each other
four years after they last played together on an Amesbury softball
team that reached the Division 2 North Final.
DeMontier, who plays for the American International College
softball team, was named first-team All-Northeast Region by the
National Fastpitch Coaches Association last Thursday.
The recognition came one day after Waters, a junior second baseman
at University of Maine, was named America East Conference player of
the year.
"I actually saw Ashley on Sunday because I went home for the
night," DeMontier said yesterday. "I talked to her about her award
and my recognition. We always have a joke that her and (Triton
alumnus) Katie Younes were both Cape Ann League players of the
year. Those two had their own club. I was never in it. We always
joke about that."
DeMontier, a red-shirt junior, led her team in batting average
(.402), home runs (7) and slugging percentage (.527). Those numbers
compare favorably to those of Waters (.352, 10 home runs, .612),
who graduated a year after DeMontier at Amesbury. Waters was the
Cape Ann League softball player of the year in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Younes, who graduated from Triton in 2004, was the Cape Ann League
field hockey player of the year in 2002.
Younes is a red-shirt senior softball player at Long Island
University's CW Post. She struggled at the plate (.234 batting
average) this season one year after being named All-East Coast
Conference. Still, her team earned an invitation to the NCAA
Division 2 NCAA Tournament. CW Post opened against Emporia State
last evening in Houston, Texas as part of the NCAA National
Championship Festival.
"It's funny we're all making it big in the softball world,"
DeMontier said.
