Back-to-Back: Adelphi Wins National Championship With 17-7 Victory Over West Chester

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Gettysburg, Pa. - Adelphi University captured its second straight NCAA Division II National Championship Title after defeating West Chester University, 17-7, Sunday afternoon at Clark Field in Gettysburg, Pa.

With the victory the Panthers became the first NCAA Division II women's lacrosse program to repeat as champions with their NCAA Division II record, fourth title.  The Panthers won their first championship in 2004 and then again in 2006.

Adelphi concludes the year with a 19-1 record, while West Chester finishes the year at 19-2.

Adelphi scored the game's first goal minutes into the game when junior Kaitlyn Carter (Mineola, N.Y.) scored off a pass from fellow classmmate Elizabeth Fey (Kings Park, N.Y.). Carter finished the game with a game-high five goals.

West Chester responded minutes later with its first goal of the game by Erin Oczkowski to tie the game at 1-1.  The Panthers quickly answered back as Fey picked up her 58th tally of the year to give Adelphi a 2-1 lead.

Later in the half, West Chester tied the game again off a free position goal by Lauren Glassey to even the score at 2-2 with 17:47 remaining in the first half.

Less than a minute later the Panthers connected on back-to-back free position shots by sophomore Marissa Mills (Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Demmianne Cook (Nesconset, N.Y.) to take a 4-2 lead.

Adelphi would score three more times to end the first half with a 7-2 lead.

The second half started the same way as the game started with a goal by Carter as the Panthers increased their lead, 8-2.  Adelphi would add two more goals, both by sophomore Erica Devito (Shoreham, N.Y.), to take an eight goal lead with 23:32 remaining in the game.

Oczkowski put an end to Adelphi's run scoring her second goal of the game for the Golden Rams to cut the Panther's lead to 10-3.

West Chester would eventually inch its way back when Glassey scored her fourth goal of the game to cut Adelphi's lead to 11-7.

However, the Panthers responded with six straight goals to close out the game, including three from Devito, to secure the 17-7 win and the team's fourth National Championship Title in program history.

Fey finished the game with three goals and an assist and was named the championship's Most Outstanding Player.  Devito and Carter each finished with a game-high five goals each for the Panthers.  Goalkeeper Caitlin Fitzpatrick (Port Washington, N.Y.) made a game-high 14 saves in net.

For West Chester, Glassey finished with a team-high three goals, while Claire Grimwood and Oczkowski tallied two apiece.  Goalkeeper MacKenzie O'Keefe had four saves in net.

Adelphi's national title mark's the Northeast-10's 11th team national championship in conference history and third title in the sport of women's lacrosse.  Stonehill College won the national championship in 2003 and 2005.

With 16 member institutions the Northeast-10 shares the distinction of being the largest Division II conference in the country along with the PSAC and WVIAC. Its 23 championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II conference.
