2013 Indoor Championship gets underway

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Southern Connecticut State University has been chosen to repeat as the Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Indoor Track & Field Champions this weekend, while the University of Massachusetts Lowell has been selected as the favorite to reclaim the Northeast-10 Women’s Championship.

The 2013 Northeast-10 Championships gets underway Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Be sure to follow the Northeast-10 on Twitter (@TheNortheast10) for live updates and news from the meet.

The So. Connecticut men have won 10 straight titles and earned 95 points and five first-place votes in the poll, as voted upon by the conference’s head coaches.

Finishing second to the Owls in the men’s pre-championship poll was UMass Lowell, which also earned five first-place votes along with 89 points. 

Stonehill College finished third with 81 points, just ahead of American International College, which garnered 80 points and one first-place vote. The University of New Haven rounded out the top-five with 58 points. 

In the women’s poll, UMass Lowell received seven first-place tallies and 96 points in the voting, and will look to repeat upon their 2012 indoor title this weekend.

Stonehill received 87 points and a pair of first-place votes to finish second to the River Hawks, followed by American Int’l with 80 points and So. Connecticut with 76 points. The Yellow Jackets and Owls also received one first-place vote apiece. New Haven again rounded out the top-five, finishing with 63 points.

Heading into Saturday’s action, four Northeast-10 student-athletes have posted NCAA provisional marks this season in the women’s 60 meter dash, including New Haven sophomore Ada Udaya, So. Connecticut sophomore Jasmine Bien-Aime, Merrimack sophomore Noelia Figuereo and UMass Lowell junior Diamond Jones.

Four more have reached NCAA provisional times in the men’s 200 meters, including New Haven senior David Thomas, American Int’l junior Dennis Stephenson, UMass Lowell senior Craig Bennett and Bentley University junior Eric Kennedy

Meanwhile, 11 women have posted provisional marks in the women’s 200 meters.

In the mile, UMass Lowell senior Eric McDonald, American Int’l sophomore Jeremy Antivo, and Stonehill’s Tim Johnson and Daniel Zawalich have all posted provisional marks on the men’s side, while Bentley senior Caitlin Fahey has done the same on the women’s side.

Five men and two women from Northeast-10 schools have hit provisional times in the 3000 meter this year, while American Int’l freshman Michael Biwott posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the men’s 5000 meter (14:03.55) earlier this season. Five others have hit provisional times in the 5000.

UMass Lowell junior Elisabeth Monty (8.59) and American Int’l sophomore Tonique Sobah (8.84) have both hit provisional times in the women’s 60 meter hurdles and are the only two Northeast-10 competitors to break the nine-second mark in the event this season.

A pair of Stonehill student-athletes in senior Corey Thomas (8.04) and Xavier Dixon (8.22) have posted the fastest times in the men’s 60 meter hurdles, with both reaching provisional marks.

On the field, Thomas also owns the second best mark nationwide in the high jump, as he jumped 7’ 3’’ back on January 25. Meanwhile sophomore teammate Nicholas Staley (6’ 11.5’’) has the fifth best performance in the event this season in all of Division II.

Three So. Connecticut student-athletes have hit provisional marks in the pole vault – two men and one woman – in junior Nelson Laskoski (15’ 9’’), senior Justin Escaravage (15’ 3’’) and sophomore Michelle Grecni (12’ 5.5’’).

New Haven’s Thomas, who has obtained NCAA provisional marks in the 60 and 200 meters on the track, has also hit a provisional mark on the field in the men’s long jump with a leap of 24’ 2.5’’. 

UMass Lowell sophomore Antoinette Toussaint (18’ 4.5’’) and New Haven sophomore Brianna Conyers (18’ 2.5’’) have also hit provisional leaps in the women’s long jump. Conyers has also posted an automatic qualifier in the women’s triple jump (40’ 2.25’’). 

The UMass Lowell A-relay team currently has the fourth fastest time in the country this year in the men’s distance medley relay (9:54.59) and is one of seven Northeast-10 relays to hit a provisional mark this season.
