athletes earn USTFCCCA All-Region honors

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Eight Northeast-10 Conference student-athletes and coaches have earned U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region major awards, the organization announced on Monday.

The Southern Connecticut State University men's track & field program swept the four men's regional awards, as redshirt senior Selasi Lumax was named the USTFCCCA East Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year and junior Nick Lebron (pictured) was named the East Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year.

Both will compete at the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo., on May 23-25.

So. Connecticut head coach John Wallin earned the distinction of East Region Men's Coach of the Year, while Owls assistant William Sutherland was tabbed as the East Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year.

University of New Haven sophomore Ada Udaya was named the East Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year by the organization on Monday.

University of Massachusetts Lowell junior Candace Greene was tabbed the East Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year, while UMass Lowell head coach Gary Gardner earned East Region Women's Coach of the Year honors. UMass Lowell assistant Kazeem Dayo Ibraheem was named East Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year as well.

Lumax enters the NCAA Championships in both the 800 meters and as a member of his team's 4×400 relay team. He currently holds a top-10 national time in the 800 meters and is in the top-15 in the 400. He won the Northeast-10 title at 800 meters and was the New England Champion in the 400.

Lebron enters the NCAA meet as the No. 3 seed in the decathlon with a season's best and school-record score of 7,263 points. He helped his squad to Northeast-10 and New England titles.

Wallin, in his third season as head coach, won his third consecutive Northeast-10 Outdoor Championship and second All-Division New England Championship. The Owls captured the Northeast-10 title by 61 points. His team is currently ranked No. 7 nationally entering the NCAA meet with 10 entries.

Sutherland, who is in his 21st year with the Owls, has three athletes entered for the NCAA meet. His student-athletes won the shot (Michael Cameron), discus (Jacob Tomczak), and hammer (AJ Guerra) to help the team win its 11th consecutive Northeast-10 Outdoor Championship.

Udaya, a West Haven, Conn. native, claimed four Northeast-10 titles at 100 and 200 meters and in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays en route to setting three meet records and being named Northeast-10 Women's Athlete of the Year. She is No. 9 in Division II at 100 meters in 11.68 (-0.8m/s) and No. 11 at 200 meters in 23.76 (+1.0m/s). Udaya won at 100 and 200 meters in meet-record fashion at the New England Championships and ran a leg of the winning 4×100 relay.

Greene will be making her second straight appearance at the NCAA Championship this season – having placed 12th in the shot put at the NCAA indoor championship – and has earned the seventh seed by virtue of the seventh-best throw this season (48 feet, 8.25 inches). The Annapolis, Md. native is fresh off winning the New England championship in the shot put with a throw of 48' 1.75'' and helping UMass Lowell to a share of second place among 35 NCAA Division I colleges. The triumph came one week after Greene won her sixth Northeast-10 title with a toss of 46' 11.75.

Gardner, now in his 11th season, saw his women's program win the 2013 Northeast-10 Championship by 70 points and finish runner-up in the New England Championships to URI. The team posted five Division II Championships qualifying marks throughout the season.

Also in his 11th season, Ibraheem coached Elisabeth Monty to a sweep of the 100 and 400 hurdles at the New England Championships. He guided Monty to NCAA Division II Championships berths in both the 100 and 400 hurdles at No. 12 and 4 in the division, respectively, and Antoinette Toussaint to No. 6 at the 400 hurdles.

The USTFCCCA also released its All-Region honorees last week, where the top five from each region in individual events and each member of a relay ranked in the region's top three earn the All-region distinction.

The Northeast-10 had 73 men named USTFCCCA All-Region honorees in 112 events overall, while 61 women from conference schools earned All-Region accolades in a total of 91 events.

So. Connecticut and UMass Lowell both had 28 All-Region selections apiece, while American International College had 22 and Stonehill College 20.
