SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Four men and
three women representing Northeast-10 Conference schools have
received 2013 Capital One Academic All-America At-Large honors, as
selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA). The announcement was made on Wednesday afternoon.
Bentley University senior golfers Matt
Michel and Dan McQueen
received First and Third Team honors, respectively, while Stonehill
College ice hockey player and 2013 Northeast-10 Man of the Year
Dana Borges earned Second Team accolades.
Adelphi University senior and former Northeast-10 Men’s
Tennis Player of the Year Andreas Hammar
was also named to the Third Team.
One Northeast-10 student-athlete made each of the three Capital
One Women’s At-Large Teams, as Bentley senior
Nicole Dion (field hockey) was named to
the First Team, The College of Saint Rose senior
Caitlin Brauer (women’s swimming
& diving) earned Second Team honors, and Stonehill senior
Kayla Green (women’s lacrosse)
garnered Third Team accolades.
Brauer also received two prestigious conference honors at the
Northeast-10 yearend banquet this past Monday night, where she was
named the 2013 Northeast-10 Woman of the Year and Co-Female Scholar
Athlete of the Year.
Michel, who has a double major in corporate finance and
accounting/liberal studies with a 3.88
GPA, led Bentley to a tie for 10th place at the 2013 NCAA
East/Atlantic Super Regional. The Danvers, Mass. native was the
Falcons’ top finisher, tying for 34th overall. The 2013
Powers Award as Bentley’s top senior scholar-athlete also
received Capital One All-America Third Team honors a year ago.
McQueen played a team-high 22 rounds during his final collegiate
season, finishing with a 77.4 stroke average. He placed third at
the Northeast-10 Championships last fall and tied for sixth at the
2012 New Englands. McQueen, in three Bentley seasons, helped the
Falcons earn an NCAA tournament bid each year. The Topsfield, Mass.
native earned his degree in finance and carried a 3.85 GPA.
Borges, a team captain for the Skyhawks, hails from Taunton, Mass.
and has a 3.72 GPA as a Criminology major. He totaled 87 points in
his career and led the Northeast-10 with 37 points on 15 goals and
22 assists in 2012-13, a year in which he was a First Team
All-Conference choice. Borges was also selected as a Concannon
Award finalist this year, as one of the top Division II or III
American-born players in New England.
Hammar, the Panthers' mainstay at top-flight singles and
doubles, registered a 3.84 GPA as a marketing major. After earning
conference player of the year honors in 2012, he earned
Northeast-10 All-Championship Team status this year after leading
Adelphi to the conference semifinals and posting an 11-7 record at
No. 1 singles.
Dion, a team captain, made the move from the front line to
midfield for the 2012 season, a year in which the Falcons earned an
NCAA berth. The Lunenburg, Mass. native amassed a 3.93 GPA
while majoring in marketing and minoring in management. She put
together four perfect semesters and was also named Capital One
All-America Third Team a year ago.
Brauer, a Clifton Park, N.Y. native, will be forwarded along for
the NCAA Woman of the Year Award as the 2013 Northeast-10 Woman of
the Year. She had a 3.75 GPA as an Accountancy major and completed
her MBA in just four years. The team captain is a four-time NCAA
Championships qualifier and two-time All-America selection in the
400 individual medley.
Green, an IWLCA All-America Second Team choice, is a
Communications major with a 3.70 GPA. She finished second in the
conference this season with 89 points on 64 goals and 25 helpers
and helped lead the Skyhawks to an NCAA berth.
The Capital One Academic All-America Division II Men's At-Large
program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice
hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water
polo and wrestling.
The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that are committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country.
