FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2010 UMass Lowell Field Hockey, National Champions
In December of 2010 at the NCAA’s Fall Festival in Louisville, the University of Massachusetts Lowell field hockey team completed a perfect season with a 1-0 win over Shippensburg in the National Championship game. Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year Liz Day scored the only goal of the game late in the first half as UMass Lowell claimed it’s second national title in the sport.
The River Hawks posted a 24-0 record during the season and - rather remarkably - only allowed eight goals all season long. Sammy Macy led the UMass Lowell offense with 76 points, and would later be named the Honda Division II National Athlete of the Year, while goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins led the country with a mind-boggling 0.35 goals against average for the champions.
