Not Upset! All Four Higher-Seeded Team Advance to NE10 Quarterfinals
In very, very different fashions, all four higher-seeded teams advanced to the Quarterfinal Rounds of the 2018 Northeast-10 Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships Friday night. Here's how the four games played out -
MEN'S FIRST ROUND
#4 SW Southern Connecticut 76, #5 NE Southern New Hampshire 74 | BOXSCORE
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Jerry Luckett Jr. simply wasn't ready for his career to be over. The senior tipped in an inbounds pass at the buzzer to send Southern Connecticut on to the Quarterfinal Round as they stunned SNHU 76-74 earlier tonight. The Owls would trail for most of the 2nd half until Luckett's heroics would provide them with a two-point win.
Luckett was one of four Southern Connecticut players in double figures. Isaiah McLeod led the team with 22 points while Ulyen Coleman chipped in with 15. The Owls will now head to Manchester, N.H. to take on the top seed from the Northeast Division, Saint Anselm, Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
#4 NE Stonehill 85, #5 SW Adelphi 74 | BOXSCORE
EASTON, Mass. - Stonehill exploded for 52 second-half points to knock off Adelphi earlier tonight at Merkert Gymnasium. The Skyhawks fell behind early as the Panthers opened up a 19-point advantage in the first half, and led Stonehill 44-33 at the intermission. Stonehill would knock down eight three-pointers in the second half to erase the deficit, and advance to Sunday's Quarterfinal Round. They'll take on top-seeded Le Moyne in Syracuse Sunday at 4 p.m.
Five different Skyhawks players would reach double-figures with Brandon Twitty leading the way with 19 points. Will Moreton chimed in with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
WOMEN'S FIRST ROUND
#4 SW Adelphi 66, #5 NE Merrimack 50 | BOXSCORE
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Adelphi would outscore Merrimack 21-5 during the opening quarter of play Friday night and never look back as the defending NE10 champions advanced to the Quarterfinal Round of this year's Championship with a 66-50 win. The Panthers will now head to Massachusetts to take on Stonehill, the top seed from the Northeast Division Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Simone Hobdy and Natalie Fekula scored 16 points apiece to lead the offensive attack, while the Panthers as a team outrebounded Merrimack 47-28.
#4 NE Southern New Hampshire 75, #5 SW Saint Rose 62 | BOXSCORE
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Junior Kylie Lorenzen, pictured, registered game highs of 26 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Penmen to the NE10 Quarterfinals with a 75-62 win over Saint Rose. Southern New Hampshire will now head to New Haven to take on Southern Connecticut Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
The Penmen were dominant on the glass as they outrebounded the Golden Knights 53-25, including a season-best 28 offensive rebounds. Of Lorenzen's 16 caroms, ten were on the offensive side. Jen Shelp chipped in with 14 points, while Briana Camara added 11 for Southern New Hampshire.
