COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's Associate Director of Athletics Tacy Lincoln announced the hire of Jason Hammel as men's tennis head coach recently, effective immediately. Hammel replaces Ryan Magee, who continued in the capacity for the first six matches this school year while the College completed its national search for a new head coach.
"The most fulfilling part of coaching is finding and training players and helping them to maximize their potential," said Hammel. "What I value in a player is one who loves the game, knows what it means to work hard, and who wants to be the best player they can be. The people running our athletic department and their passion for all of the athletes at this school to succeed is inspiring, and is by far the best part of working at Saint Mike's."
A long-time tennis pro with the Longfellow Tennis Club in Wayland, Mass., where he was director of the high-performance program, Hammel has cultivated some of the top talent in New England, including two-time high school state champions in each Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont.
Many of Hammel's players have succeeded in United States Tennis Association (USTA) tournaments, winning USTA National Level 2, USTA New England Open and USTA New England Sectional crowns. More than 100 of his students have earned regional rankings, among them 20 who have achieved national rankings.
A USTA regionally-ranked junior player, Hammel played tennis at Division I University of Hartford before graduating summa cum laude with a degree in computer science from Framingham State University, where he earned an Outstanding Service Award. Hammel comes from a long line of tennis players, as two grandparents are enshrined in the USTA Intermountain Hall of Fame, his father is in the USTA New England Hall of Fame, and various family members were named 2000 USTA Family of the Year.
Hammel is a product owner for web app company Trusted Local Contractors in Burlington.
