LIU Post Football and Field Hockey Participate in Polar Plunge for Special Olympics

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. - On Saturday, the LIU Post football and field hockey teams participated in a Polar Plunge at Tobay Beach for the Special Olympics Foundation. The squads' combined effort raised nearly $500 for Special Olympics New York, which boasts 64,659 athletes training and competing year-round in 22 Olympic-style sports.

"It's great to not only help out financially, but to be able to participate alongside the athletes while raising awareness was a humbling experience," said Head Field Hockey Coach Raenee Savin. "The plunge was a challenge; it wasn't easy for us and this mirrors the challenges these athletes face daily."

Members of the Pioneer football and field hockey teams asked friends and family for donations to help them take the plunge for a great cause.

"The Polar Plunge was an excellent event for us to participate in," said Head Football Coach and LIU Post Director of Athletics and Recreation Bryan Collins. "Part of our athletic program's mission is for our student-athletes to be involved in service to others, and what better way to do this than to commit to another group of athletes. I'm proud of all of our football and field hockey players, as well as staff members, that contributed to the day and took the plunge for Special Olympics."
