MANSFIELD, Mass. – Post's Lucas Smith and Stonehill's James Varney have been named nominees for the Hockey Humanitarian Award, an honor that celebrates its 25th year this season, as announced on Monday.

The Hockey Humanitarian Award Foundation gives the honor to college hockey's finest citizen – a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team, but also to the community at-large through leadership in volunteerism.

Smith, a senior defenseman, leads the Eagles in their inaugural campaign as an NE10 associate member. He has played in all 12 games this season for Post, recording 10 points (four goals and six assists), including three power play tallies.

Varney, a senior forward for the Skyhawks, is one of three players to be repeat nominees for the award. He serves as President of the Stonehill Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was appointed two summers ago as the Co-Vice Chair of the NE10 SAAC.

He is also the Northeast Regional Fellow for Team IMPACT, an on-campus ambassador for Make-A-Wish, a member of Stonehill's Internal Leadership Board, the vice president of the Stonehill Bio Pre-Medical Club and in the Stonehill College Army R.O.T.C.

Finalists for the 2020 Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced in February, while the recipient will be honored in a ceremony on Friday, April 10, as part of the NCAA Men's Frozen Four weekend in Detroit, Mich.

Smith and Varney are part of a 13-person group that makes up this year's nominees, which represent all three NCAA divisions. The nominees consist of nine seniors, three juniors and one sophomore – as well as nine male and four female players. The list includes seven forwards, three defensemen and three goaltenders.
