BETHPAGE, N.Y. - Members of the LIU Post football team recently helped fight hunger by lending a hand with Island Harvest at its annual Thanksgiving Collection at the Bethpage Federal Credit Union in Bethpage, N.Y.
In total, six players spent six-and-a-half hours collecting food for the hungry during the Thanksgiving season.
Fighting hunger and touching lives, Island Harvest — Long Island's largest hunger relief organization — serves as the bridge between those who have surplus food and those who need it. The volunteers and staff "rescue," or collect, good surplus food from over 800 local restaurants, caterers, farms, and other food-related businesses; and distribute it to a network of close to 570 soup kitchens, food pantries, and other places where those in need can access it. Island Harvest also conducts educational programs to increase hunger awareness and inform the public how they can get involved in the mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.
