Stonehill Shocks Adelphi with Four Unanswered Goals

Assumption and Stonehill advanced in thrilling, one-goal affairs earlier tonight in the Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey Championship Semifinals, and will play in Sunday's title game.

WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Belle Ives scored on a rebound midway thru the first half as No. 8 ranked Assumption defeated No. 6 Merrimack by a 1-0 final to advance to the Northeast-10 Championship Game. This marks the program's first NE-10 finals appearance since the 2002 season.

Freshman goalie Sarah Bodzinski jumped into the game with just her second career start and made a number of spectacular saves to pick up the shutout victory.

Merrimack outshot the Hounds by a considerable margin at 23-6, including 14-1 in the second half. The Warriors also held a 17-2 advantage in penalty corners that included a 12-0 total in the second period as the Warriors kept up the offensive pressure over the final 35 minutes.

Bodzinski ended the game with 11 saves to pick up the win in net for Assumption, while Madison Davis had two saves in the loss.

The Hounds advance to the Northeast-10 Championship Game for the fifth time overall in program history. That game will be played in Worcester on Sunday, November 8 as the Hounds will host No. 4 seeded Stonehill for a 1 p.m. start. The game will be carried live online at www.northeast10.tv.

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Fourth-seeded College erased a three goal halftime deficit with four unanswered goals to stun top-seeded Adelphi, 4-3 in overtime in semifinal round action of the 2015 Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey Tournament at Motamed Field this afternoon.

Stonehill (13-6, 9-3 NE-10) advances to its third straight NE-10 Championship appearance and the defending champions visit second-seeded and No. 8-ranked Assumption (14-5, 10-2 NE-10) for the title on Sunday at 1 p.m. 

Senior All-American Erika Kelly, the NE-10 Player of the Year, powered Stonehill to victory with two goals and an assist in the second half as the Skyhawks erased a 3-0 halftime deficit to force overtime. Junior Shea Healy's goal 3:24 into overtime capped the comeback and sent Stonehill through to the final. Freshman Kacie Smith also netted a goal for the Skyhawks.

Freshman Sara Freedman made five of her seven saves in the first half to keep Stonehill within range. The Skyhawks held a 19-15 advantage in shots for the contest, including 13-4 after halftime, while posting both overtime shots, and finishing with an 8-6 edge in penalty corners.

Adelphi earns the top seed based on a head-to-head win over Assumption.
Both Merrimack and Stonehill had wins over Adelphi (with a loss to Adelphi, Saint Anselm claimed the #5 seed). Merrimack earned the #3 seed based on a head-to-head win over Stonehill.
