Kapatoes Scores Twice to Lead Skyhawks to Thrilling Victory in NE-10 Finals
EASTON, Mass. - Lauren Kapatoes scored two goals, including the game-winner with 1:39 remaining on the clock, as the Stonehill Skyhawks defeated Pace, 2-1, to win the 2016 NE-10 Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday at Skyhawk Field.
Stonehill, the fourth seed, claims its third NE-10 Women's Soccer Championship and its first since 1995. The Skyhawks now earn an automatic bid into the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Kapatoes, named tournament MVP, scored the first goal in the 26th minute on an assist from Taylor Shannahan to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 advantage, which they would maintain heading into halftime. Both teams had multiple scoring opporunities throughout, but Pace finally got on the board in crunch time, as Alyssa Zeoli took a pass from Delany Williams at the 83:43 mark to tie the contest at one apiece.
Then, with it looking as if the title match would be heading to overtime, Kapatoes came through in the clutch, delivering the game-winning goal on an assist from Emily Scollard in the 89th minute to clinch the title.
Pace outshot Stonehill 16-9, as NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Year Jamie Block had four saves in goal to help Stonehill to the victory.
