LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Highlighted by an unassisted Abi Sawyer tally, the LIU Post field hockey squad is headed to the 2014 NCAA Field Hockey National Championship, as they defeated Stonehill 3-2 on Thursday.
The first half of action saw the Pioneers take an early advantage, as senior Lyn-Marie Wilson found the back of the cage off of a Dani Crouse helper at 20:01. The Skyhawks answered back seven minutes later with a Lauren Giordano goal to tie the contest. Through the first stanza, the green and gold offense ripped five shots on goal, while a strong back line allowed Stonehill only two.
LIU Post pressured Stonehill early in the second period, as senior Stephanie Ruhle dove in front of the cage to poke a Wilson assist past Skyhawk keeper Elizabeth Genovese. Once again, Stonehill retorted with an equalizer. At 60:16, the Pioneers took the lead for good, as Sawyer sent a rocket to the top left of the cage to secure her first collegiate goal and the Pioneer victory.
Through 70 minutes, the green and gold led a 12 to six shot tilt and a eight to six advantage in penalty corners. Pioneer goalkeeper Ericka Parks added a save to her 16-2 overall mark.
With the win, LIU Post improves their record to 18-3 overall and is set to play Millersville in the NCAA National Championship on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 4 pm in Louisville, Ky.
