WORCESTER, Mass. - The Assumption College men's lacrosse team recently volunteered at the Matthew 25 organization in Worcester, which is a non-profit corporation located in Worcester whose mission is to provide food and housing relief to people in need.

The group of players, tabbing themselves as "The Union Crew", enthusiastically volunteered its time at the private non-profit corporation during the five-hour event as part of the department's comprehensive community service initiative. Teammates junior Kerry Craig, junior Garrett Smith, junior Ben Mastrogiovanni, junior Peter Gersbeck, sophomore Tim Casey, junior Dan Fitzgerald and assistant coach Vinnie Sullivan-Jacques took part in the event.

In the spirit of the biblical passage from which it draws its name, Matthew 25's mission is to empower low-income families in Worcester and Boston, Massachusetts, by providing housing and food assistance. Matthew 25 accomplishes this goal by acquiring abandoned properties in Worcester and Boston, engaging volunteers from the community to renovate the properties and renting the remodeled homes to low-income families at a percentage of their income.

Christopher Burke, who serves as the contractor and volunteer coordinator for Matthew 25, gave the Assumption work crew a tour of the site, explained the philosophy of the organization and then motivated the group to work on sealing the home and prep for siding.

"The team was incredibly impressed by Chris's enthusiasm and commitment and learned a great lesson about what it means to be a part of the Worcester community," said head coachKeith Loftis.
