Assumption, Saint Rose Set to Square Off in NE-10 Women's Soccer Championship Final

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 7, 2014

It'll be a battle of the top two seeds in the Northeast-10 Championship Final on Sunday as Assumption College and The College of Saint Rose will meet in Sunday's showdown. Here's how they got there.

#1 Assumption 2, #5 Franklin Pierce 1

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Assumption College women's soccer team won its Northeast-10 Conference semifinal match-up 2-1 against the Franklin Pierce Universtiy Ravens Friday night. The win propels the Greyhounds into the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The victory lofts Assumption's record to 15-3-1 overall while Franklin Pierce drops to 11-6-1.

The match between the Ravens and the Hounds started out slow with both teams failing to score throughout nearly the entire first half. It wasn't until the 41st minute that the first goal of the game was netted, off the head of NE-10 Player of the Year Paige Radomski, pictured.

NE-10 All-Rookie selection Nikki Sloan launched a corner kick from the left side into the box. A couple of Hounds batted the ball around before Radomski headed it past Raven keeper Casey Cook for the 1-0 lead.

At the 73-minute mark, a Greyhound foul in the box placed Franklin Pierce's Talita Pereira at the line for a penalty kick. Despite being in the right place, Assumption goalie, Rachel Edgin, was unable to secure the ball and the Ravens tied up the score.

The goal sparked a quick response from the Hounds as Radomski netted her second goal of the game, the eventual game-winner, just nine seconds later on the game clock. The well-placed shot went high into the left corner of the net over the hands of Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Casey Cook.

#2 Saint Rose 3 #3 Adelphi 0

ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose scored three times in the second half to upend Adelphi Universtiy 3-0 in today's Northeast-10 Conference Championship Semifinal at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

The seventh-ranked Golden Knights (17-1-2) are now a win away from their seventh NE-10 Championship within the past eight years. They will visit top-seed Assumption on Sunday in an attempt to claim another title.

Freshman forward Morgan Burchhardt then added an insurance tally with 83:48 gone by and senior midfielder Meeghan Arno closed it out less than four minutes later.

Senior Sam Whitney, the 2013 and 2104 NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded three saves in each period to keep Adelphi (13-5-1) very much in the match for most of the contest. Sophomore Ashley Homer did not need to make a save, but nevertheless distributed the ball flawlessly as the Golden Knights defenders routinely played it back to her throughout a cold, damp, and windy afternoon.
