Honor recognizes top American-born
Division II/III men's player in New England

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Three Northeast-10 Conference student-athletes have been named semifinalists for the 13th annual Joe Concannon Award, which is presented annually to the top American-born player in Division II or Division III in the region of New England.

Among the candidates are Saint Anselm College's Mike Richard (pictured, left), Saint Michael's College's Josh Geary (center), and Stonehill College's Dana Borges (right). All three are seniors and are among 20 semifinal candidates.

The field of players is chosen by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston, which plans to announce the finalists and winner of the award in March, prior to the start of the NCAA Division III Frozen Four. The presentation of the honor will come at the New England Hockey Writers' Association dinner in April.

Richard, in his final campaign as a Hawk, has recorded 19 goals and 12 assists for a team-leading 31 points thus far. Throughout his four years on the Hilltop, Richard has appeared in 97 career games recording 80 points on 49 goals and 31 assists.

Geary, a second-year captain, is the first Purple Knight to be considered for the accolade since the 2008-09 season. He leads Saint Michael's this season with career highs of 16 goals, 24 points and five power-play markers, and for his career, Geary has 67 points on 36 goals and 31 assists.

Borges is in the midst of an outstanding season at Stonehill, leading the Northeast-10 in points (37) and assists (22). In 97 career games, he has recorded 29 goals and 58 assists for 87 points. Borges also served as a team captain during his junior campaign and is a seven-time member of the Northeast-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

The Gridiron Club established the Concannon Award in 2001 to honor Joe, a lifelong devotee of college hockey, former member of the Walter Brown Award Selection Committee and, as a journalist, a staunch advocate for the amateur athletes he knew and covered. A native of Litchfield, Conn., Joe graduated from Boston University in 1961. He served as sports information director at Holy Cross before joining the Boston Globe in the late 1960s to cover college sports. Joe declined frequent invitations by his editors to write about Boston's major professional sports teams, preferring to concentrate on the colleges, distance running and golf.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country. Leading the way in the classroom, on the field and within the community, the Northeast-10 is proud of its comprehensive program and the experience it provides student-athletes.
