Seven student-athletes honored with prestigious honor

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – The Northeast-10 Conference office has announced its Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winners for the 2012-13 winter season. 

Seven student-athletes representing seven different member institutions have earned the prestigious honor.

The student-athletes receiving recognition for the winter athletic season are Assumption College’s Kevin Donahue (men’s basketball); Bentley University’s Lauren Battista (women’s basketball); Stonehill College’s Dana Borges (ice hockey); Le Moyne College’s Scott Thieke (men’s swimming & diving); The College of Saint Rose’s Caitlin Brauer (women’s swimming & diving); Southern Connecticut State University’s A.J. Guerra (men’s indoor track & field); and American International College’s Nathan Starr (women’s track & field).

Donahue was also named Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference for the winter after helping the Greyhounds to the NCAA East Regional, as the grad student averaged a team-leading 14.1 points this past season.

Battista, a Capital One Academic All-America selection as a junior this year, was also named Most Outstanding player of the Northeast-10 Championship for the third consecutive season. The First Team All-Conference selection averaged 14.9 points and 6.7 rebounds or the Falcons, who reached the NCAA East Region title game.

Borges was a First Team All-Conference and Academic All-Conference choice this season, leading Stonehill to the Northeast-10 Championship semifinals. The senior led the conference in 2012-13 with 37 points on 15 goals and 22 assists.

Le Moyne’s Thieke was selected as Academic All-Conference this season and also finished fifth in both the 500 free and 400 IM at this year’s Northeast-10 Championship.

Brauer wrapped up her stellar four-year career with the Golden Knights with an invitation to the 2013 NCAA Division II Championships. She was also an Academic All-Conference selection this season.

Guerra also received Academic All-Conference honors, and received All-America status after finishing eighth in the weight throw at the 2013 NCAA Division II Championships.

Nathan also earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships, placing third in the long jump after being named Academic All-Conference as well.

The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that are committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country. Leading the way in the classroom, on the field and within the community, the Northeast-10 is proud of its comprehensive program and the experience it provides student-athletes.
